This little girl, named Cheep, is now 7 years old. She was rescued by my daughter, who lives in Essex, as a tiny, naked and cold hatchling. It wasn't possible to return her to the nest, so my daughter took her home and hand-raised her, even taking her to work (on a motorbike!) tucked in her bra. Once Cheep was old enough to learn to fly, my daughter brought her over to me in Kent. Once I was satisfied that she could fly strongly and confidently, I walked out into my garden with Cheep sitting on my shoulder. It wasn't long before my sparrow colony spotted her, and the General (dominant male) gave her a commanding 'cheep'. She flew off my shoulder and joined him in a tree, and has been a prominent member of the colony since. She is easily recognised because of her white markings, and I've noticed that several of the babies each year also have white markings, where before there were none, so she has obviously added her genes to the pool.

Even though she was hand-raised, and very tame at the time, since she has joined my colony she has reverted to being completely wild, which is good. Incidently, I have noticed that while my sparrows are collecting bugs from my garden to feed their babies, they seem to have got it off to a fine art. My clematis was infested with blackfly (I never spray because of the birds), but instead of picking off the insects, the sparrows are taking whole leaves covered in them! Okay, so maybe my clematis is looking a bit bald now, but this really shows intelligence and initiative!
