Love Nature? Eat Cupcakes!
Tracey
When we heard from our lovely Community Fundraising colleagues at the RSPB Scottish Headquarters about a competition at a local bakery to design and invent a new cupcake, we thought it would make a great task for our Wildlife Explorer Group, which meets at the Hermitage of Braid in Edinburgh. The fact...

Hi, Unsure about choosing the right plants to get a garden that's brimming with bees? This year, if you look at the bulbs in the garden centres you'll see a cheerful bee logo on some packets. With the backing of gardening and wildlife organisations, the Bee Friendly logo - and some other similar...

Rescue bee
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, Time for a longer blog, I'm not used to all of this typing. Have you heard about the swarm of bees that was rescused from a road sign at Saltholme? They've been in the news and everything . A swarm of about 20,000 honeybees gathered on the back of the sign on the driveway...

Hi Polly, its great to hear they are attracting bees, although if you are a bee and looking for a brightly coloured flower to settle on, it would be difficult to miss these, they are literally glowing with colour! Hoverflies come in various shapes and sizes, many of them try to mimic wasps and bees but...

Garden mini-beasties
KatTai
Some of the garden mini-beasties I managed to get photos of, saw others including the kate moss of the hoverfly world (it was stick thin!) and a crazy wasp thing that went round the lavander heads like he was on a marathon! But here are some that were more willing to have their picture taken... ...

Incredible insects
Lotte Large
Even if they creep you out, insects really are incredible. Just take a look at this red tailed bumblebee - look at its eyes, its little feet, its wings and furry little body! Now, if you're an expert like me, you'll know this is a bee. We know it visits flowers and probably lives in a colony...

One man went to mow ...
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, If mowing the lawn is a nightmare, spare a thought for Dan (and our other volunteers). They've been spending hours mowing the new meadow path at Saltholme. New meadow path? If you've not been down the 'short cut' yet, then what's kept you? The new path runs...

What do crows, buzzards and gulls have in common at this time of year? These species are all carefully watching over their youngsters during June. Buzzard and crow chicks are approaching fledging if they have not already made the big jump into the big wide world, where as gull chicks are at a variety...

Re: Is there such a thing as CWD

Bees love clover and keeping at least part of the lawn uncut through the spring and summer can attract in a whole host of different invertebrates to those that you will find in short-mowed-to-within-an-inch-of-its-life lawns. Diversity in grass length is the key to a wildlife rich lawn (as well as ditching...

A beautiful sunny day in our Aberdeen garden. Just the sound of bees humming and the occasional gull wheeling overhead. A couple of bees alighted on one of the ornamental leeks - soon to be joined by many others. Unfortuneately, they were more camera shy than these two!
