Monday's Magic Moment: my mum always used to say...
lucinda
'Don't talk with your mouth full.' And it's a lesson this fieldfare might want to take note of if he doesn't want to lose his rather juicy-looking berry! Fieldfares are winter visitors to the UK and a very common sight in gardens at the moment - whether you're digging yourself...

Some Of My Current Regular Garden Visitors
Ella
I haven't taken many pics in recent months of the birds that visit my garden, but have started again, and thought I'd post a few. Nothing exciting, I'm afraid. No rare species, but I'm always thrilled to see any birds coming here. They're so wonderful to watch. Sorry the pics aren't...

Some Of The Birds I've Seen Over The Past Week!
Ella
My friend and I have just returned home from a lovely week spent in North Wales. We love going to Porthmadog, Llanberis, Caernarfon and other nearby places, and went to a few places on Anglesey too. During our travels we managed to take a few photos of some of the various birds we spotted. Some in fields...

Is This A Buzzard?
Ella
My friend and I have just come back from spending a few lovely days in North Wales. Whilst going for a walk near Pentraeth on Anglesey we saw this beautiful bird of prey sitting on a wall and took some photos of it. We're not very good at identifying different birds of prey, but someone we showed...

Bird ident help?
ThePotsmith
I tried to use the Bird Ident on here but it didn't show anything that looked like the wee visitor we have been getting for a few days. It looks like a sparrow in size, mannerisms and even colour. But instead of having stripey wings (black and brown) he is spotty almost like a leapord! I have...

Berries, booze and birds

I don't mean The Wire TV series (although apparently it's brilliant). I mean the real one: telegraph and phone wires. Because this weekend they could be getting very busy as house martins and swallows show off their tightrope balancing skills. My bird book, Birds of Britain and Europe , says...

I am always pointing out bird songs to my non birding golfing partners and was delighted when one of them said to me, "is that a great spotted woodpecker I can hear?" and it was. Success, another golfer who uses her ears as well as her eyes.

My sister has a beautiful, if possessive, pair of mistle thrushes. They guard her bird table and cotoneaster berries, often attacking any other bird hoping to dash in for a quick snack.

We were walking through a car park near the Thames and my 11 year old daughter yelled, "A Kingfisher!" Sure enough a kingfisher had landed near us. We watched him dive for fish. I was so happy that she had spotted him and knew he was special!

It was hard to believe that such a small, delicate bird would soon be flying out over Land's End and across the sea. No wonder it didn't seem in a hurry.

I stand on the beach and the blizzard of snow buntings swirls past me on the sea breeze. Keep still, don't breathe, don't make a sound. Suddenly they're flying towards me and then they're at my feet, looking at me. A big moment with a small bird.
