  • Forum post: Re: ROBINS

Hi Vivvy, not only do they hang on bird feeders.. they will also eat on the hover! I've managed to get some high speed video of the one in our garden doing this, one of the best below. I've got more videos of this robin and other birds on my youtube page if your interested...
  • Blog post: This weekend... help birds stay warm

... not by knitting them little woolly hats and scarves, but by giving them some food and water. The weather forecast is looking chilly for the weekend for much of the UK (as I write this it's minus 4 Celsius in sunny Sandy - pretty tough for us soft southerners). So it's even more important...
  • Forum post: Snow on the way....

Well, it would seem the birds know the weather is about to change. Yesterday & this morning has just been a huge feeding frenzy in my garden with seed & mealworms going down a treat! The blackbirds & sparrows are enjoying a nice long drink along with a lovely, if not cold shower in the...
  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Blog post: Time to start counting your garden birds

Today is the launch of the Big Garden Birdwatch. It's our most important weekend of the year when we ask you to spend just one hour of your time recording what birds you see in your garden or park and sending in the results to us so we can find out which species are doing well and which need our...
  • Forum post: Re: Bird watching

Hi Everyone we are Linda and Kevin from South Wales. This is also our first time on the BIG GARDEN WATCH, and a neighbour of Maggies, who kindly brought it our attention.- Hi Maggie, Looking forward to counting some birds, but at the moment no littlies only medium and biggies so to speak as not much...
  • Blog post: Monday's Magic Moment: eating like a bird

With Big Garden Birdwatch coming soon, who wouldn't be delighted to have these visitors to their feeders? If you're not familiar with them, they are tree sparrows . Numbers of these pretty birds plummeted by 95 per cent between 1970 and 1999, so we're working hard to give them a helping...
  • Forum post: I'm going to feed the birds all year round. Is this ok?

Hia Folks I'm new to this website, but have already had loads of lovely replies to other messages I have posted. In the past, I've only ever fed my Garden Birds during the winter. But in the last few years I've heard it's ok to feed them all year round. So I plan to start doing...
  • Blog post: This weekend...Prepare for your Birdwatch

The countdown to the Big Garden Birdwatch is on! It’s now just three weeks until it’s time to sit down, perhaps in your favourite chair, and look out your window for just one hour, counting the birds in your garden. So, how can you make the most of your Birdwatch? Just how are you going...
  • Forum post: How much do you spend on your birdies?

I have no idea how much the average cost of a feeder, food, etc, is, and I was hoping others could share their average spend on birds! How much would you say a feeder should cost? How much money on food per week? Any input is valuable to someone with a small income a month!
  • Blog post: This weekend... create a Christmas tree for birds

Christmas is the season of goodwill, so this weekend why not treat your garden birds to an early Christmas present? Decorating a tree in your garden with edible ornaments is a great way to help birds to fatten up and survive the cold winter weather, and will create a lovely festive focal point for...

  • Blog post: This weekend...be a bird food master chef

I love cooking - especially baking cakes. But while I think a lot about making food for myself, I'm ashamed to say that I don't often think about making something for the birds that visit my garden. But as I recently discovered, it's easy to make your birds a tasty treat. And as winter...
  • Blog post: Batten down the hatches here comes winter! Plus a reminder of summer.

With dropping temperatures, high winds, showers and the threat of snow over high ground, winter is definitely on its way! With our winter migrants making landfall and spreading out across the UK, and with Feed The Birds Day on October 29, now is the perfect opportunity for a quick checklist on the essentials...

  • Forum post: Helping Mallards nesting in Kent.

Hi all, I live on a houseboat on the Medway estuary, Kent. Yesterday we noticed our resident mallard has a new broad of 7 chicks, unfortunately though last year we only saw the chicks for a couple of days and each day it was distressing to notice the number of chicks get less and less :( I'm wondering...
  • Forum post: Single Mums!

I have a nest box in my garden with a fitted camera. For the past fortnight a bluetit has been incubating 8 eggs in it. This morning 3 of the eggs hatched. Unfortunately, there has been no sign of her partner for the last week or so & I am concerned how she is going to feed them on her own. Any advice...
  • Forum post: Re: Do birds have lunch hours?

Great pictures and an interesting question! Birds are creatures of habit in many ways and it is often possible to predict a birds behaviour. The goldfinch for example will often feed first thing in the morning, spend the middle part of the day singing, preening and resting in the tree tops before...

One moment that became a daily recurrence - this is one of the many times a robin would feed from my hand. It was a thrilling experience; I felt privileged. I'd like to think I kept him (or her) alive during winter.

The chicks have hatched and feeding is now a frenzy of activity. Another feeding run done and one parent's about to leave the box to find yet more food. A joy to see and the chicks are now extremely vocal whenever the parent's are nearby.

  • Photo: 2522

One of the robins at my local nature reserve flew onto my hand for some birdseed. He was so light. Just the faintest tickle of his claws. And so trusting. A magical moment. I photographed him afterwards on the ground waiting for more food.

A cormorant surfaced with an eel in its beak. After a five-minute struggle the cormorant swallowed the eel headfirst - it could be seen writhing inside the cormorant's throat, its tail still protruding from the beak, but was then swallowed whole.
