5.12.11

Some more rain over the last fews days has brought more pintail (ca.120) and black-tailed godwits (ca.50) to the site, to go with the many hundreds of lapwing, wigeon and teal. Firecrest(s) still present around the trail, crossbills still sporadically appearing on the heath. Many fieldfares and redwings...

Another small one
Pete Hughes
A yellow-browed warbler still in the scrub/trees at the top of the zig-zag path today (ie about 100m from the visitor centre) - elusive but a few folk have managed to catch up with it. It was found on Monday by a couple of regular visitors and by the sounds of it, has been roaming between west mead hide...

Re: Fieldfare with attitude
IanH
I've just found this thread and that's a really good question and one that I don't know the answer to! In flocks the adult birds tend to take the lead and the younger birds follow, especially in migrating flocks like cranes, swans and geese, but for fieldfares it's not as obvious. I would...

harriers and kite
Pete Hughes
2 juvenile marsh harriers spent some of the morning hunting over the north brooks today, putting the wind up ca.200 wigeon and ca.150 teal and occasionally annoying each other. 4 ruff and single golden plover amongst ca.200 lapwings. First fieldfares and redwings of the autumn arriving - small parties...

singing and not singing
Pete Hughes
Out early this morning to see if there were any sand martins or swallows feeding over the brooks - no such luck, but I'm sure they will be here soon. The only spring migrants I could find were 2 or 3 chiffchaffs singing between the hanger viewpoint and Nettley's hide. There was quite a lot of...

murk, murk, murk
Pete Hughes
Very murky over the last few days - when visibility allows up to 50 golden plover and up to about 80 black-tailed godwits can be seen on the brooks. A few dunlin and 1 or 2 ruff are still to be found amongst flocks of lapwing. On saturday afternoon (about 14.30 - 15.30) 2 barn owls were hunting nr the...

grass reappears
Pete Hughes
Water levels have dropped back to something like our normal winter levels after last week's flood, revealing lots of grassland again. About 100 black-tailed godwits, 55 golden plover and a few ruff and dunlin have made use of it yesterday and today, along with thousands of ducks (mostly wigeon, teal...

warming, just
Pete Hughes
The snow of last week has gone and the remaining ducks (wigeon and teal) are mostly confined to the river due to the ice, although there is a gradual thaw going on. A few lapwing and snipe are scattered across the brooks, and surpisingly a redshank and a green sandpiper were present this morning. Many...

fresh powder

Yikes - wasn't expecting quite so much snow overnight (about a foot), more than I've seen in Sussex in my lifetime. The visitor centre is open (just), though very limited in what we can provide - just about a hot drink. The access track and some of the car park has been cleared of snow this morning...

The case of the fallow deer
Michael Andrews
After first been seen on November 1st - we appear to have a fallow deer living at Blacktoft Sands. It was seen quite a few times during the first week of November but then we have had no records until today (Friday 26th) and then it was only seen very briefly out the front of reception. If anybody has...

fieldfares breeding at Bridlington - Flock of 100 linnets
barnsleymike
I stayed on the 21st to 24th April at Marton Grange guest house near Sewerby in Yorkshire and saw originally a pair of Fieldfares and later 5 fieldfares. Are they breeding here or are they just late in migrating? Also I saw over 100 what appeared to be linnets in a flock on the coast line near to RSPB...

How to help a fieldfare?
culintg
hi, like loads of other people, I now have a fieldfare in my garden. He originally came with about 6 others, but seems to have lost his friends. However, unlike other people's mine is not bossy - the opposite actually - the little birds are bullying him :-( . As suggested, I have put food away...

Hello from Norwich I can sympathise with the working from home difficulty. Last week, I had a single fieldfare eating apples from the trees in my neighbour's garden, and the best view was from my study! Fabulous bird, and, as someone wrote earlier, it didn't seem too distressed at being a...
