  • Forum post: Hello fellow twitchers

Dear community, I have recently joined and am another twitcher too. My favourites are the Goldfinches, hence fourteen, which, last year I managed to attract into my bird service station in one sitting, it was a personal best for me, having had regular large visitor numbers from the guys in red, white...
  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Forum post: Beautiful Birds

I rarely spend a whole hour looking at birds coming and going from my garden, but I have to say it was a peaceful pastime and well worth it. I'm lucky to have Goldfinches as regular visitors, and today there were 5 on the one Niger seed feeder. They are beautifully bright, colourful birds and I love...
  • Forum post: Goldfinches

Hi, I bought a nyger seed feeder on 26th Jan hung it up on the 27th and on the 29th I counted 10 Goldfinches already lining up to eat! I was astounded by how quickly the news carried that we had Nyger seeds amongst the Goldfinch community! Stunning little birds
  • Forum post: Re: BGBW What was you Star Species?

My star was the Goldfinches, they only started showing up a few days ago.
  • Forum post: Re: Is it cheating?

My garden isn't at the back of my house, it is over a yard/drive and round a corner, so I have to actually be in it to count. What's more the garden is big so I can only see so much of it at anyone time, so when I sit further down the one end, the birds don't come in so much, as I put them...
  • Forum post: Some Of My Current Regular Garden Visitors

I haven't taken many pics in recent months of the birds that visit my garden, but have started again, and thought I'd post a few. Nothing exciting, I'm afraid. No rare species, but I'm always thrilled to see any birds coming here. They're so wonderful to watch. Sorry the pics aren't...
  • Blog post: RSPB nature reserves - tell us about your visit

Adrian Thomas did us proud with his feature on RSPB nature reserves in the Spring 2012 issue of Birds . I hope you will be inspired to make a trip to a reserve you haven’t explored yet, or to revisit an old favourite or two over the next few weeks. We want you to don your outdoor gear, put on...
  • Forum post: Hello From West Midlands. I have a query??

Hia Folks I wanted to join a bird watching forum, and RSPB seemed the obvious choice. I am in my 40s, married with teenagers. I've been a bird lover all of my life. I also love to draw and paint birds and small animals. I'm from near Wolverhampton, West Midlands. Where is everyone else...
  • Forum post: Red hats arrive just in time for Christmas

Had a few redpolls around the past few days but nothing like last year... until today. Seemed like a big influx and I counted 15 in one birch tree. At times they even outnumbered goldfinches on the feeders (though most of the time it was vice versa). And this morning there was something like 40 birds...
  • Blog post: Waders and Gulls amassing on the Estuary- Mid July 2011

7th July Norman reported a good collection of Waders and Gulls in the vicinity of Saltmarsh Pool today: 8 Black-tailed Godwits in Summer plumage, 420 Black-headed Gulls, 14 Redshank and 1 Adult Mediterranean Gull. The warm humid conditions brought out insects and good numbers of Swallows hawking after...

  • Photo: Finches galore!!!

When bad weather, this feeder attracts siskins, redpolls and goldfinches in vast numbers. During my BGW, I counted 17 redpolls in one session! Although expensive, it has brought me endless pleasure. The tray on the bottom which catches seed also serves as a feeding station. Go on, invest and enjoy!

  • Blog post: The first young are appearing - Week ending 20th May 2010

14th May A wet hazy morning but birds were in full song down the Loaning . A cuckoo could be heard out on the Moss. A Mallard and her seven ducklings were visible on the 1st Pool . Mallard and ducklings A Roe deer could be seen from the hide, grazing away across the rushy meadow. Met Stephen...
  • Blog post: Walk down Campfield Loaning, 10th May 2010

Had a brisk walk down Campfield Loaning which, on this fine Spring day, was resounding with birdsong. Heard and observed Willow Warblers, Sedge Warblers, Garden Warblers, Lesser Whitethroat, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Hedge Accentor (Dunnock), Tree Sparrows, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, House...

This was the first time I'd seen goldfinches in my garden. They're very sweet and look like a pair of bookends. They visit more often when I'm at work but just knowing they visit is satisfying.

Nyjer seed feeders in the garden are certainly worth the effort. On a daily basis, we are entertained by anything from one to 30 plus goldfinches at a time. Charming moments indeed.

For some considerable time now, we have put out nyjer seed feeders in our garden. Our efforts are regularly rewarded as we are often 'charmed' by anything from 2 to 30 plus goldfinches just a few yards from our window.
