  • Forum post: Re: SlowMo Birding Action Shots

Lolly, that's a really good first effort and especially for this time of year in Scotland! :D The brightness and size of the LCD display on cameras does make the shot look much better than it would on a full sized computer. I've taken many shots which I thought were great 'on camera'...
  • Forum post: Birds in garden

  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Forum post: My first BGBW in my garden in Essex

Have seen greenfinches in the past and at times we have many collared doves sitting on top of the pergola over the pond (sometimes mating). Do at times get quite a lot of sparrows too but this was what I recorded today 29th January 2012 between 11.30am and 12.30pm Blackbirds 2 Starlings 12 Woodpigeon...
  • Forum post: Some Of My Current Regular Garden Visitors

I haven't taken many pics in recent months of the birds that visit my garden, but have started again, and thought I'd post a few. Nothing exciting, I'm afraid. No rare species, but I'm always thrilled to see any birds coming here. They're so wonderful to watch. Sorry the pics aren't...
  • Forum post: Re: Request for photos of leucistic birds

Hi sorry, wasn't going to say but have to, the Leucistic Starling , isn't. It's a juvenile, I'm inundated with them each year, here is a photo of some with and adult.
  • Blog post: New Year Resolution: get out and see more!

So how are your New Year resolutions holding up? Four days in, still going strong? For many, there will be the usual suspects... lose weight, get fit, stop smoking. For me, it’s always the same one: get out and see more of nature. I don’t keep lists, but I do write down little snippets about...
  • Blog post: No partridge, nor a turtle dove, in my pared tree

No. This isn't a bah humbug moan. I like this time of year. There are lots more birds visiting gardens for people to see and you don't have to get up very early to hear the (winter) dawn chorus. To add some Christmas jollity, MP's have clearly stated that Government plans to nod through...
  • Blog post: Winter's coming...

October saw the arrival of many of our winter visitors and as November progresses we have had fantastic sightings of geese and other wildfowl. Today saw the largest number of Greylag geese so far with 500 counted on the Loch this morning, with a Barnacle goose and 3 White fronted mixed in for good measure...
  • Forum post: Cleaning Nestboxes

Hi I am wanting to clean my nest boxes but at least three of them (3 of 4 that can be seen from the living room) are still being visited occasionally during the day (2 by tree sparrows and 1 by starlings). If I clean them now I am worried about disrupting their night time roosting. Should I just...
  • Blog post: Starling roosts at Fen Drayton

I visited Fen Drayton Lakes RSPB reserve near Cambridge for the past couple of Saturdays, hoping to catch the starling roost at dusk. I wasn't disappointed. Word must have got out, as the car park was full on both occassions. Watching the spectacular display was very much like being at a fireworks...
  • Forum post: Anyone know where there's a starling roost on the Suffolk coast?

It's that time of year when we usually expect to be able tell visitors where they can watch one of nature's greatest spectacles - the nightly flocks of starlings swirling through the sky before dropping down to roost in reedbeds, copses or town centres. So far this year we know of a few thousand...
  • Forum post: Bird ident help?

I tried to use the Bird Ident on here but it didn't show anything that looked like the wee visitor we have been getting for a few days. It looks like a sparrow in size, mannerisms and even colour. But instead of having stripey wings (black and brown) he is spotty almost like a leapord! I have...
  • Blog post: A starling, but not as we know it!

Sunday was one of those strangely unpredictable days that seem all too familiar here at Minsmere. Despite a poor weather forecast, we were actually treated to good weather, resulting in lots of visitors - avian as well as human. For some it started early. John Grant, familiar to many as a volunteer...
  • Blog post: A retrospective look at June on the reserve.

The last in a short series of diaries about birds on the reserve from Ken Croft. Hopefully, in the future we'll round of the previous month with one of his summaries..! "In a month with no real highlights here are the highlights. A Little Grebe dropped in on 30th, Grey Herons were regular...
  • Blog post: My watch is slow...

Either that, or things are on the move early in this slightly odd year. Having confidently predicted the first returning autumn waders on the 9th or 10th of the month, it was almost inevitable I suppose, but I was still surprised to flush a green sandpiper yesterday. Green sands are scarce spring migrants...
  • Blog post: Just a day late this time

I've spent the last couple of days fairly intensively scouring the reserve for broods of lapwing chicks. In the end, we found a total of 22 broods, totalling 42 chicks - not great, but better than last year & considering the way the water is disappearing, I'm quite pleased with the total...
  • Blog post: This weekend... spot some starlings

It's that baby bird time of year again... You might already have seen young blackbirds , robins , chaffinches and dunnocks taking their first journeys into the wide world outside the nest. Many great tits and blue tits have nested early this year, so their squeaking youngsters might already be out...
  • Photo: A bird shaped flock of starlings at Gretna

The most glorious sight I have ever seen. Immense murmuration of starlings just north of Gretna in Southern Scotland. Amazing. There is also my film on Youtube.... www.youtube.com/heandfi I'm told that the flocks are gathering up there again this year and well worth a visit.

I was having my breakfast in the kitchen looking through the window at the various birds coming and going. I saw a family of starlings. The mother was feeding the young and was amazed how far the mother's beak went down the youngsters throat!
  • Photo: 2897

I looked at this fledling starling and could see him thinking "what shall I have for starters?"
  • Photo: 2819

i look out from my kitchen window to see this view most days. makes you glad to be alive
  • Photo: 2753

I was amazed to find what I think is a sparrowhawk in my garden in the middle of town feeding on a greedy starling. I am not a birdwatcher but was fascinated by this sight.
  • Photo: 2690

To sit and enjoy watching the birds is a great moment
  • Photo: 2662

Made me realise how beautiful even the most common birds can be.
  • Photo: 2624

The murmuration of Starlings in the TOWN CENTRE of Crewe in Cheshire was just breathtaking in its size & beauty as they performed their airial ballet right on our doorstep. They have returned again this year
  • Photo: 2417

It was a cold mid nov evening , shivering on the side of a country lane in Anglesey. Suddenly there they were thousand upon thousand of starlings. "Why do people pay to watch the fireworks" my wife asked. "when you can watch nature's fireworks"
