Did you know that mould is a type of fungi? Have a go at this rotting experiment to grow you own fungi and gross out your friends.
You will need:A see through plastic bagSome breadA camera
Take your bread and dip one corner in some water, now place your bread inside the plastic bag and seal it. This will ensure that your bread stays warm and moist, just how fungi like it. You will need to find a place to leave your bread where it won’t be disturbed for a couple of weeks. Everyday take a photo of you bread and watch how it spreads. How long does it take? You can watch your mould growing for about 2 weeks. After this time it will get a bit boring as not much more will happen. When you’ve finished your experiment throw your mouldy bread straight in the bin. Don’t open the bag, the microscopic spores of mould can be bad to breath in.
If you want to be even more scientific try dipping your bread in something else like vinegar, ketchup or milk. What happens?
When your experiment is finished you could print off your photos, shuffle them and ask a friend to see if they can put them back in the right order.
