Big Garden Birdwatch

Big Garden Birdwatch is the world's biggest wildlife survey. It's fun, easy and only takes an hour to do.

  • Has anyone seen waxwings in recent weeks? I saw a flock of them in a neighbour's larch tree the other weekend - couldn't believe my luck!

  • hi watcher havent seen waxwings since the middle of december last year, down here in devon thought they had all flew back.

  • Had the most amazing start to the New Year.  Opened my curtains New Years day morning to see a flock of about 10 waxwings eating the berries on my front garden hedge.  Saw them frequently for the next couple of weeks but they have now moved on.  I only cut the hedge with hand shears to leave the berries on - my hard work paid off!

  • Cheeseycheesecakes - I've never seen waxwings before, so it was a real treat. (You have a very appropriate id photo - a very plump waxwing!)

  • I live in Blackpool north and there were 2 waxwings in my neighbours garden on the 9th January.

Very exciting as I've never seen them before either!!

  • I love your photos.  I never seem to have the camera ready when I see the birds in action. Will have to improve my response time!

I treated myself to a Canon and a large lens last year ;-)

Photos aren't brilliant but I always have my camera on the worktop  ready. It doesn't help the battery but the idea was to be able to take bird photos and I don't like to miss an opportunity. We have a big window in the back bedroom so i can get some good shots from there. Goodness knows what the neighbours must think if they saw me with a camera and big lens!!!

Also managed to get a photo of a  redwing with it, albeit  a bit blurry, and a fieldfare with my old point and shoot digital (all in my neighbours garden, not mine!)

I think the moral of the story  here is to 'buy a crabapple tree' as that's what attracts them to my neighbours garden and not mine!

  • Yes, saw 2 waxwings on a tree in my garden in East Sussex. Have lived here 23 years and never seen them before. While I was doing the Birdcount too, how lucky and amazing was that ?!

  • We live in Northumberland and had 12 waxwings in a tree in the garden this afternoon. They were all really plump and were very happy feeding on the berries on a nearby bush.

  • That's really lucky on your birdwatch - the birds seem to know about the "special" weekend and keep out of sight!
