We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...

Augest 2nd finch came an sat on my shoulder!, Not sure whet type but had patches of reddish/ pinkish on chest, seamed only young. Also had brown ring on leg number 0303 I think! If anyone is tracking bird was in CB1 area, would be great if he turns up again somewhere, Id like to know, Also if anyone...

I know the photo isn't brilliant, but 5 species of finch in one shot was quite good? (Hawfinch, Greenfinch, Bullfinch, Brambling and Chaffinch). Some of our regular species did not turn up, but we still had 26 species in an hour this morning. The female Hawfinch arrived yesterday.

The Collins Complete British Birds book has a photo of a female Chaffinch which does not seem to be anything like the illustration in the RSPB identification section of the web site. As a novice bird watcher this is very confusing. The attached is a very poor quality photo of what I believe is one...

Sorry but I never got a picture of this but we had 2 birds on our new bird feeder the other day. At first I thought they were chaffinches, which I would of been pleased about as we have not had any this year so far. But I noticed one of them had a bright red patch on its head.
