  • Forum post: where have all the berries gone?

Two days before BGBW there were 42 thrushes taking all the berries from one tree in the garden, and several smaller bushes growing against the wall. When the big day arrived there was hardly a berry to be seen anywhere so inevitably no birds, oh well !

Taken in Guiseley during the 2013 Big Garden Bird watch - The Red Polls and Siskins are much fewer in number this year with only the latter reaching double figures
  • Forum post: Predators

Last summer I was keeping my eye on our kitten and the neighbour's cat who were both stalking a wood pigeon, who was happily pecking at the spilled seed beneath the bird table. He seemed quite oblivious of the two cats stalking towards him from opposite ends of the shubbery. I was getting ready to...
  • Forum post: Re: ROBINS

Hi Vivvy, not only do they hang on bird feeders.. they will also eat on the hover! I've managed to get some high speed video of the one in our garden doing this, one of the best below. I've got more videos of this robin and other birds on my youtube page if your interested...
  • Forum post: Mutually exclusive birds at birdfeeder

I've had the pleasure of a mixed flock of blue, great and coal tits on the birdfeeder for most of the winter. However for the last few days they appear to have gone missing leaving a "hole" in my usual great Birdwatch count. They have been replaced by a flock of siskins. There are a number...
  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Forum post: My first BGBW in my garden in Essex

Have seen greenfinches in the past and at times we have many collared doves sitting on top of the pergola over the pond (sometimes mating). Do at times get quite a lot of sparrows too but this was what I recorded today 29th January 2012 between 11.30am and 12.30pm Blackbirds 2 Starlings 12 Woodpigeon...

  • Forum post: Re: Is it cheating?

My garden isn't at the back of my house, it is over a yard/drive and round a corner, so I have to actually be in it to count. What's more the garden is big so I can only see so much of it at anyone time, so when I sit further down the one end, the birds don't come in so much, as I put them...
  • Photo: Long Tail Tit

A really new visitor to our garden.. I think maybe because of the Swinley Forest fires last year, and subsequent re-planting / cutting / felling etc that is in our forest, that their flight route may have changed. Hopefully a new regular visitor...
  • Photo: Juvenile Blue Tit

One of a big brood that basically lived on my bird feeder. Having no fear, I could stand next to the feeder or sit just below and they would happily just come and go. This pic was taken from about 3ft away
  • Forum post: Garden Bird Watch - Robin is in charge

The robin took charge of the new feeder and patrolled between feeders on 2 trees chasing away the blue tits and great tits. However when the long tailed tits arrived he did not chase them - are they too aggressive for him? I have a pheasant who also patrols the garden - another appeared last week but...
  • Forum post: Re: who's missing?

I have finished my hour only common birds in my garden. Sparrows seem to go for a break when I am counting they must be squabbling in someone elses bushes. Blackbirds are having a good show of numbers trying to claim territory. Bluetits are nervously pecking on the suet coconuts and leaving after a few...
