But this year, it’s even more special because it’ll be the Big Schools’ Birdwatch 10th birthday, and between 24 January and 4 February, we want schools and youth groups around the country to celebrate with us – not by blowing out candles and eating cake (although they can if they want to), but by staring out of the window!Since its launch in 2002, the Big Schools’ Birdwatch has inspired nearly half a million children and teachers about the wildlife outside their classroom window. With over 2,000 schools expected to take part, the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Birdwatch has helped to track bird populations in schools over the last decade. More than 70 different species have been recorded in school grounds, ranging from starlings and house sparrows, to kestrels and even pheasants. We’re also excited that after its success in 2010, Little Schools’ Birdwatch is back for the 5’s and under to take part in, while for Key Stage 3 students (11-14 year olds), 2011 sees our first Really Big Schools’ Birdwatch.Unfortunately, we can’t provide you with a party bag and cake, but we can give you everything you need to take part in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch. Free activity packs are available containing resources to plan a fantastic birdwatch. We want to make sure everyone’s invited, which is where you come in.
