Here are a few ideas you can do to prepare for Big Schools' Birdwatch (it starts next week!)

This year there is a new book which you can buy to help you with your Birdwatch. It's called The Big RSPB Birdwatch. The book is aimed at children and can be a useful resource for identifying birds; it is packed full of suggestions for other activities that tie into the Birdwatch which can be used as extension activities at home or in school. Some of the activities include:

  • how to listen to (and recognise) birdsong
  • how to draw a bird
  • make your own bird guide
  • design your own game

The book can be bought in the RSPB shop here.

You could try these tasty birdfood ideas with your class, brilliantly demonstrated by the students of Wrestlingworth Primary School.

Crumble pastry maggots

Put 85g of flour into a bowl

Mix 30g of lard or high fat margarine in with the tips of your fingers

Rub the dry mixture into little pieces that look like maggots

Sprinkle onto the ground, on the birdtable or around bushes and flowerbeds

Apple feeders

Core an apple

Wrap some string around it for hanging

Press some birdfeed into the apple

Hang near your Birdwatch area!
