  • Photo: European Shag

Taken at the Farne Islands in May 2008. This marvellous place is a must if you want to get close to seabirds! The shag is superficially like the cormorant but is smaller and slimmer and has a lovely purple and green sheen to the feathers.
  • Photo: Gannet

Taken at Bempton Cliffs, RSPB Reserve in May 2008.
  • Photo: Jay

Taken at Maple lodge reserve, near Rickmansworth, Herts. This was taken from the hide in the entrance building. The jay landed in the trees some way off to check out the feeding station, but decided not to come closer.
  • Photo: Swallow

Taken at Minsmere RSPB reserve by the sluice. These were nesting under the sluice and had become accostomed to the regular passing birdwatchers.
  • Photo: Waxwing

It's been an excellent winter for waxwing in the UK. They only come in any numbers every few years, when conditions in Scandinavia are too harsh for them. This year there have been thousands. These were feeding on rowan berries in a Retail car park in Leighton Buzzard.
