Odd one out
SteveF
This male Great Spotted Woodpecker is a regular visitor to the silver birch trees at RSPB Top Lodge at Fineshade, Northants, along with three females. He's fascinating to watch as he'll take food from the feeders and then push it into a tiny hole in the birch before taking breaking it up into...

Path to the Light
SteveF
This image captured just a split second of a constantly changing environment - it'll never be the same ever again. Taken at Penmon Point, Anglesey.

Poppy field
SteveF
Thousands of poppies appeared almost overnight in the field near my house. The following day they had all gone as the farmer had ploughed the field. I wanted to get a poppy's eye view of the world with this image.

Poppy Field forever
SteveF
Thousands of poppies appeared almost overnight in the field near my house. The following day they had all gone as the farmer had ploughed the field but the pictures will last forever.

Snowy robin
SteveF
There are few sights as iconic each winter as a robin in the snow. This one kept me company for over an hour, returning to the same icy bramble stem after brief visits to a nearby bird table.

Star fisherman
SteveF
Part of a series of pictures taken on Anglesey, there was a real feeding frenzy from the gulls as they worked the lower shore for these starfish. Once caught they would break away from the main groups, 'wash' the starfish in a shallow rock pool, and then swallow them whole! It all took a matter...

Starling murmuration at RSPB Fen Drayton
SteveF
A small but perfectly formed ball of starlings perform their magical display over the reedbeds at RSPB Fen Drayton, Cambs - one of the UK's true natural wonders. Better than the rubbish on evening telly too! Head to Fen Drayton in Oct/Nov and you'll see what I mean.

Sunset over The Wash
SteveF
One of the most important wildlife habitats in the UK, the Wash is, ahem, awash with birds at dusk.

Teasel sunset
SteveF
I love watching the goldfinches tear apart the teasels which grow on the banks of the River Nene near my home. They might be spikey to us, but they're no match for the clever finches.

White Red Kite

This is a leucistic (not albino) red kite, photographed in mid-Wales last summer. An amazing looking bird and certainly very different to the norm.

Winter sun on blue tit

Even the most brief break in the winter clouds and a few minutes of warming sun can bring nature to life. Taken at RSPB Top Lodge, Finesahde, Northants.
