I have been trying to see one of these for years - they are very rare in the UK. This one turned up near Wendover on migration back to Africa and I was lucky enough to find it. I sat down to watch a few metres away and after feeding on ants for a few minutes it flew over and landed right by my feet....

It's been an excellent winter for waxwing in the UK. They only come in any numbers every few years, when conditions in Scandinavia are too harsh for them. This year there have been thousands. These were feeding on rowan berries in a Retail car park in Leighton Buzzard.

European Shag
Dipperish
Taken at the Farne Islands in May 2008. This marvellous place is a must if you want to get close to seabirds! The shag is superficially like the cormorant but is smaller and slimmer and has a lovely purple and green sheen to the feathers.

Jay
Dipperish
Taken at Maple lodge reserve, near Rickmansworth, Herts. This was taken from the hide in the entrance building. The jay landed in the trees some way off to check out the feeding station, but decided not to come closer.

Golden Plover
Dipperish
This was taken on the beach just past Sizewell, on a stroll from Minsmere RSPB reserve. These are normally seen later in winter in large flocks in southern England, but are usually hard to approach. In summer they adopt their spectacular breeding plumage and head North to breed.
