This is interesting as juveniles from our nest last year headed West rather than North..

Three Choughs have been seen flying in and out of the nest cavern but no-one was able to see any coloured rings so no ID.

We have been developing a woodland walk at Portmeirion with the help of the garden staff there and those of us doing have been learning a lot about trees, fungi and lichens etc. It's been huge fun!

As well as all that I have learned to do the commentaries on the Puffin Island Cruises going out from Beaumaris. That is fantastically enjoyable. There was one cruise when birds were just popping in and out of the water all round us - Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Black Guillemots, Cormorants Shags, Kittewakes, Fulmars, Gannets, Eider Duck, Sandwich Terns and Greater and Lesser Black Backed Gulls. Harbour Porpoise and seals completed the picture! Marvellous! :-)))

I am having a great time with the RSPB!

I'm making the little boxes up, and hope to pop out to a few places this week to try and get them placed, I was wondering if there are any Badge Box minders who use this site who could share any hints and tips for me and others.

My info pack says not to place them in places where there are caged birds, also I was wondering if there are any store chains where it wont be worth bothering to try to place boxes, such as Tesco etc... as I notice my local Tesco already supports a charity through most of the stores I've sen.

They were careering around the ledges like kids on a picnic last week and on Saturday they had disappeared. However on Sunday, faced with the sort of downpour that only Snowdonia can produce, they crept back inside! Today the weather was improving and they were off again!

They will still be around the huge quarry/ cavern complex that comprises Llechwedd being taught how to feed themselves and as summer progresses they will be seen further and further afield probably ending up over the other side of the Moelwyn Hills in the Croesor Valley. We will get the occasional report of a sighting - they are individually identifiable by the coloured rings that were put on them some weeks ago.

We are so pleased that our parent birds have raised all four of their chicks this year - up to now we have only ever had three survive. This is a really great "Date with Nature" site and we hope to be back next year - do try to come! Choughs are quite simply brilliant birds! Noisy, active, intelligent and playful as only corvids can be.

Three cheers for the Llechwedd Choughs!!

I am getting really excited about going to Llechwedd Slate Caverns tomorrow for my first day this year at our "Date with Nature" stand. It's such fun talking to people about our beautiful Choughs and seeing the spark of interest starting as they watch the pictures from the webcams! Birds have always been a passion for me and there is nothing better than watching other people, especially kids, falling in love too!

I'm currently looking for a bit of advice.

I am looking for a possible career change (from IT) to something a bit more worthwhile, physical and outdoors related.

For as long as I can remember I have loved wildlife, be it insects, birds etc etc and I love doing anything outdoors.

I recently decided to look into volunteering for a number of reasons, namely

1. To see if I actually enjoy the type of work

2. To help look after habitats etc

3. To gain experience for possible later employment

I have been onto the RSPB volunteering page and am very interested in the residential stays at the reserves. I would love to do something like this, however I have a number of concerns, which maybe people could advise on

1. The application form asks for one of the referees to be able to comment on my suitability to work with young people. I have never had the chance to work with young people before and so no-one can really comment on my suitability.

2. I have no specific experience with conservation or specific wildlife knowledge.

Might either of these cause any problems for me, or will I pick up experience of both while doing the residential?

I emailed the contact on the volunteering page with similar questions but as yet have not had a response.

Thanks in advance!

Can anyone help me!

I live on South Uist and i want to volunteer but i have no idea who to contact or what sorts of local volunteering i can do as the RSPB reserve in North Uist is to far for me to travel to. :(

Peregrine Falcon's

I am curently volunteering with the RSPB's Date With Nature Event on at Lincoln Cathedral, did it last year too, but I never knew about this untill now, so hello all.

Animals, wildlife, all forms of life are my passion and in my little garden, where I live,I have created a haven for the wildlife, the butterflies, bugs, foxes, badgers, and all of the lower forms of life, which are to be treasured, as one can see from the past, all our animals are being depleted in number due to poaching, killing, poisoning and extermination. We must not think that because we have any animal, eg. the birds, in any great number that they too, will not disappear, because they will, lest we look after, treasure them as we do ourselves; one great person wrote that a country is judged by the way it treats its animals; look at Roumania, no comment. After all, it was man who ruined Planet Earth and not the animal, hence, animals have just as much right if not more right to live peacefully on our Planet.
