What long ears you have!
Rhian Davies
Over the past couple of weeks the lovely long-eared owl has been making an appearance on the reserve. Because these owls are so well camouflaged and roost during the day, they can be hard to spot and easy to disturb. We've set up a Viewpoint in the scrub allowing you to see them whilst letting...

Defrosting Planet

Hi, The ice that has covered many of Saltholme’s water bodies over the last few days is starting to retreat as temperatures begin to rise. This hasn’t stopped the Water Rail from showing amazingly well from the Wildlife Watchpoint as can be seen from the video footage I recorded below...

A close encounter
Rhian Davies
Assistant Warden Toby had a close encounter with a deadly hunter, when out topping up the birdfeeders. His brush with death came when a sparrowhawk flew between him and the bird table he was restocking. Sparrowhawks are adapted for hunting in confined spaces, but this is normally so they can flit...

Stormy skies
Rhian Davies
The weather over the last few days has been violent at times, but it has also added drama to the skyscape around Saltholme. This sunset through the storm clouds over the lake was particularly eye catching. Rhian

What a week!
Caroline
Here we are at the end of the first week of Springwatch at Ynys-hir. All I can say is...WOW.. what a week we have had at the reserve. The build up since last summer, when the BBC team had a good old look at the site and said - 'Oh yes, this looks pretty good' - to today, after a week of amazing...

Buzzards on camera

Well, the first live broadcast of springwatch went out on the air last night and what a superb programme it was! The aerial shots of the reserve were brilliant and I particularly liked the shots of parts of the reserve taken in February and then again in May; the contrast between the bare, grey, starkness...

Cables and cameras
Russell Jones
More springwatch preparations today with generators arriving, cables laid to some of the wildlife hubs and microphones set up near the heronry. The duct and fibre optic cable has been laid to the Visitor Centre from the Studio location and we will hopefully be getting these connected early next week...

Saltholme's own royal wedding
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, As Kate and William’s big day draws closer, we're blowing the regal trumpets about Saltholme's own pair of lovebirds - two elegant great crested grebes. You'll remember that I blogged some amazing photographs earlier in March of this pair of grebes. The photographs...

Parachuting for the ladies
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, Love is in the air at the this time of year. We've had displaying great crested grebes , boxing hares and ribbiting frogs galore. Now, some of Saltholme's more modest residents is starting to feel amorous - the meadow pipits. Meadow pipits perform a wonderful display. They...

I love Robins and when I saw this one, I thought, Wow!, it was perfectly framed with the tree branches. I thought about my nanny and how she loved Robins when she was alive.

I regularly enjoy watching 'Horatio' the heron perched on the tree at the top of my garden or flying over looking out for a potential snack. I was delighted to see 2 herons perching, it's an amazing sight to see them so closely in a residential area.

Sitting in my lounge at dusk I hear a tap on the window...then another, then another. Turning round, only 3 feet away, three Coal *** are fluttering up and down tapping on the window as if wanting to come in and say hello! Truly amazing.

On a trip to the Farne Islands to hopefully see the puffins, it was amazing to see nesting shags just inches away and obviously untroubled by our presence - what a fantastic day!

Having only ever seen one solitary puffin from far away, we went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands this summer - amazing!! You couldn't move for puffins - there were hundreds, along with many terns, shags and guillemots. What a spectacle!

I live in the Adelaide Hills and have many birds visiting my garden every day. However, the resourcefulness of this blackbird took my breath away!! The top of the gas bottle made a perfect housing for her nest.
