  • Forum post: Re: SlowMo Birding Action Shots

Lolly, that's a really good first effort and especially for this time of year in Scotland! :D The brightness and size of the LCD display on cameras does make the shot look much better than it would on a full sized computer. I've taken many shots which I thought were great 'on camera'...
  • Blog post: Watery wonders

Two new reports have shed new light on life on earth. The first claims to have found the world's oldest living organism and the second writes off that old phrase... 'there are plenty more fish in the sea'. The Mediteranean Sea is home to a organism that DNA testing dates as being 200,000...
  • Blog post: I am not a bird

Coots, moorhens, mallard, swans, geese, pigeons, crows, grey herons and even a couple of smew dotted the ice covering Regent's Park's lakes yesterday morning. They all seemed happy enough and some poked their heads under water through holes in the ice. Sometimes I wish I was a bird. That I...
  • Blog post: Tales from the Riverbank - poor Ratty.

Last Friday I dusted down the video equipment which we'd been using to record the recent footage of otters. In fading light just before close of play, satisfied that the kit was ready for action after the festive season shut-down, Nick and I re-installed it on one of the channels in the middle of...

  • Blog post: A touch of Gloss

An amazing run of spectacular birds continues at Burton Mere Wetlands with a Glossy Ibis being first seen on Saturday again on Sunday and even as I type the bird is still present. These little egret sized birds usually migrate to Africa for the winter but in certain years several individuals find...
  • Forum post: "You shall not pass"

The girl is getting ready for her second attempt at her driving test and as a responsible parent I feel it is very important that she experiences many different routes and roads - from our short duel carriage way max 40mph to our green lanes with high hedges and unforgiving granite walls max 15mph. I...
  • Forum post: Water birds and a bit of a surprise

I am not going to admit to going down to the ponds just incase an off course visitor might have found them yesterday but I needed a bit of me time. The result was a bit of an education. At the first pond, my little friend the Sandpiper was having a good wash and brush up. It really seems to like this...
  • Blog post: J'Thames

It's awesome. Standing on Southwark Bridge as I was the other day, looking over the edge in to the river. The sheer volume and movement of water is astounding and mesmerizing. Is the Thames London's greatest but most ignored asset? It's a muddy emerald of a river that used to be the Capital's...
  • Blog post: A snappy snack!

We tend to prepare ourselves for eating shellfish with a finger bowl, a side plate and a napkin at the ready. But this grey heron at Leighton Moss opted to down a crab lunch in one and was caught on camera by David Poole. Mr Poole said: “Herons are one of my favourite birds and I was...
  • Forum post: Re: The Birds of Wallasea Island

I thought I'd just add a couple of photo's as we've all been quiet for a while, nothing spectacular I'm afraid, all rather poor shots but hopefully some of you will follow suit and add some nice shots of birds we haven't covered here yet - Hint hint!!! This one here I'm thinking...

  • Blog post: Springwatch species up-date

Following on from a number of facebook, twitter and e-mail queries I thought I should write a small up-date on the blog concerning those birds that were on the BBC Springwatch web-cams. There is now little activity at the heronry with only occasional birds coming in to roost with lots of juvenile herons...

Hi Keeta Great photos, but the close up of the heron is a stonking photo. Wow! :-))
  • Forum post: Re: Surprise sight of a heron

Thank you to post your beautiful photograph! Perhaps, I found a way to send the photograph (not as good as yours!)... This one is very grey not so much white on his head. PS: I really like your quote! From Abraham Lincoln... !!!! :-)) file:///Users/elianeclarke/Desktop/Heron.jpg
  • Forum post: Surprise sight of a heron

Dear RSPB members and team, Today was a big surprise for my husband. While working on his computer, his window facing the back garden, a big heron was standing close to our bench!! He did not see it landing. He took the camera, which is never very far, to take a shot from behind the window of our...
  • Forum post: Elmley after the ice

Hello All, Glad the ice has gone. Rain and wind to contend with now. I managed to get a visit somewhere after ice and inbetween rain and wind. Have fun RR

Balancing act! It's great to see herons so close to humans. They do of course get the occasional snack courtesy of successful fishermen.

This heron has a route along all the fish ponds in the local gardens. Just caught him on a misty day on next door's roof. Wonderful when you get nature so close.

A beautiful fabulous fishing machine He walks very slowly surveying the scene Plunging his dagger deep into the prey I've seen him dispatch seven fish in one day The pond isn't large And the owners complain But I sit and watch him again and again

While out for a walk along the river at Alfriston, I had seen this heron flying, as we headed back to the car I spotted it perched on the side of the bank. I was surprised it didn't take flight as there were quite a few people out walking.

I regularly enjoy watching 'Horatio' the heron perched on the tree at the top of my garden or flying over looking out for a potential snack. I was delighted to see 2 herons perching, it's an amazing sight to see them so closely in a residential area.

Volunteering at Fairburn Ings, my "commute" a misted dawn walk. From the gullied stream lifts a long, pointed beak and a stare like a disapproving judge. After a long, breath-held moment the heron flaps once, twice and is gone into the trees.

As I turned the corner, there sat a Heron, apparently enjoying his own moment. We shared it together.
