Hello...Great Spotted Woodpecker in my garden!
Evie_Bullfinch :-)
Hi All, A Great Spotted Woodpecker has just come to feed on the fatballs in my back garden :-) It is a regular visitor now, but it only started to come to feed a few weeks ago. These woodpeckers come to feed in our garden for at least 3 times a day now. I love watching the way that they feed and the...

Woodpecker and Jay today!
Country Girls
Our garden was a hive of activity this morning. Along with our usual everyday visitors we had a Jay and Greater Woodpecker visit! I'm so glad that they chose today to visit. They are occasional visitors and it is always a delight to see them. We had a couple of squirrels at the same time and it was...

HELP? Proposed wind turbines and ospreys - not a good mix?
Winded
Hi all, I'll be honest, my knowledge of feathers is limited! I can tell a peacock from a magpie, and a buzzard from an owl but I'm no expert, although I am very fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful friends who keep me company in the garden and around the croft. I count amongst my friends...

Winter wildfowl wonders
Ian Barthorpe
Mid winter at Minsmere means wildfowl taking centre stage. And this year is no exception - although the otters are doing a great job of upstaging them at Island Mere. On Tuesday I led the first of the winter wildfowl guided walks at Minsmere, and enjoyed some great sightings. If you missed it, you...

Sparrowhawks in Kent
Shirleyr
Hi, I have just joined. I have feeders in trees right outside my study window (about 2 feet away) and constantly have Sparrowhawks swooping in trying to get the birds. It's a game of wits as I try to place obstacles to stop him taking the small birds. My regular daily visitors are loads of...

Some Of The Birds I've Seen Over The Past Week!
Ella
My friend and I have just returned home from a lovely week spent in North Wales. We love going to Porthmadog, Llanberis, Caernarfon and other nearby places, and went to a few places on Anglesey too. During our travels we managed to take a few photos of some of the various birds we spotted. Some in fields...

Read on to find the answer to this often asked question. Guest blog by Lisa Robinson, Intern Visitor Officer The red deer rut is over! Well, it is as far as staffing the viewpoint is concerned, though there is still some bellowing in the mornings, so it might still be worth a wander up to the viewpoint...

Lesser spotted woodpecker
Roger Burchmore
What a surprise my wife and I had this Sunday morning when she noticed merrily pecking at the fat balls in our garden a lesser spotted woodpecker. With a rush for the camera I managed to get one photo before it was disturbed by a couple of sparrings. Great joy. teacher in the cupboard

Time for a stag party?
Ian Barthorpe
No, I'm not talking about boozy nights out for the boys before they get married. I mean something filled with far more testosterone than than juvenile pranks can muster. Something that really separates the men from the boys, the haves from the have nots. Something to really the girls talking and...

The grass is greener
Ian Barthorpe
Do you ever get the feeling that the grass is greener on the other side? Probably not if you live here in Suffolk (or many other parts of SE England) this spring as the continued lack of rain makes most grassy areas look increasingly yellow, so the chances are that your neighbour's lawn will be just...

A repeat performance

Following my last blog about Ernie Dale's amazing account of two bitterns at Island Mere, I decided to stroll down there at lunchtime. I wasn't expecting to see any bitterns as i was only planning to spend five minutes in the hide. No, my real target was to add a few newly arrived migrants...

Drummers in the woods
Katie Fuller
Now's a great time of year to take a walk in the woods. Trees are coming into leaf, blossom's busting out, there are lots of birds singing and nests being built. Spring's here - hooray! The early part of spring is also your only chance to hear something rather special. This is the time...

What no starlings?
Ian Barthorpe
If, like me, you watched Countryfile on Sunday night, you'll have seen the fantastic swirling clouds of starlings above the Somerset Levels. There really are fewer better spectacles in the UK. Sadly, the starlings do not seem to be playing ball here on the Suffolk coast this winter. After the...

A Greater Spotted Woodpecker took a peanut from the feeder, flew to a nearby tree, wedged the peanut in the bark, called a youngster, then watched the youngster extract the peanut from the tree. I felt so privileged to be sharing this, I cried.

A morning walk at Fort Augustus brought us to an old cemetery, close to the hills. The only sound was birdsong. A woodpecker drumming and a cuckoo calling, joined by song thrushes, robins, blackbirds and warblers. Unforgettable, absolutely priceless!
