Colours of the rainbow

The good weather of the last few weeks has been fantastic for so much wildlife and has enabled so many RSPB fieldworkers to be out surveying etc.  For me it has enabled lots of woods to be searched looking for red kite nests.  It's meant lots of long, but fun days out in the field, so computer work and housework has all suffered!  The little bits of rain we have had have made the countryside a colourful place though and all colours of the rainbow are out in the Aberdeenshire woodlands:

Red - of course lots of red kites (!) but I've also enjoyed a fantastic view of a fox who didn't know I was watching him this week.

Orange - this year seems to be great year for orangetip butterflies up here - don't know if its the same everywhere else?

Yellow - male yellowhamers are one of my favourite sights perchered on hedgerows, and they are so vibrant in the sunshine.  Whilst checking the red kite information boards at VSA Easter Anguston last week there was a male yellowhammer cheakily coming into the barns for some of the calves food.  Their call was the first I learnt as a kid so always listen out for them.

Green - everywhere is so green and vibrant!

Blue - the endless blue sky that we have been enjoying!

Indigo - the bluebellls are in full bloom here now in a few of the woods I've been into.

Violet - the ragged robin is starting to come out, but the real strong violet colour would be from the purple wingtags on all Aberdeen born kites!

And to top it all off I did see a fantastic rainbow on my way home last night!

  • Hi Jenny, I've been seeing plenty of orange-tips around too, looks like it's going to be a good summer for them!

  • Hi K - I think I might have to treat myself to a an Orangetip pin badge this weekend!
