But as the weather looks set to stay on the colder side for the next few days, at least, we think a helping hand is in order.

Birds, unlike us, have several layers of fluffy down to ensure they are well insulated. However, it is still so important that you provide the best food to give them as their struggle for food becomes more apparent.

The smallest birds, like blue tits and goldcrests, have to effectively feed throughout the hours of daylight in winter and consume a vast quantity of food - as much as 30% of their body weight - to make sure they build the necessary fat reserves to get them through the long, cold nights.

During cold snaps, you will almost certainly notice more birds coming into your garden to seek sanctuary from the harsher environment in the countryside – particularly if you provide food on a regular basis. The variety of species may increase too and you may be lucky enough to attract unusual visitors such as blackcaps and bramblings.

Finding a regular source of high-energy food such as a garden feeding station is the equivalent of winning the lottery for wild birds and a well-stocked garden is a real lifesaver.

Foods such as the suet balls from the RSPB are perfect for the winter weather. They contain mealworm pieces that are added to the premium grade suet, seeds and cereals for extra flavour and nutrition. The versatility of this type of food is what makes it ideal for feeding in cold weather. Start by taking advantage of our buggy coconut shell treat offer and save £6 on a box of 20. http://tinyurl.com/bvofpwd.

Now, you could go for the conventional flowers and chocolates (and believe me, I've been down that road many a time) but this year why not try something a little different?

Honouring your mum doesn't have to cost the earth or mean you have to take huge amounts of time off work and go away, the small gestures count just as much (the classic - 'it's the thought that counts' comes to mind!). So here at the RSPB we have a few things we thought she might like. http://tinyurl.com/czvr4t2

Now, I'm sure jewellery has crossed your mind a few times already, but finding a beautiful, inexpensive piece is hard. However, you're in luck as Estella Bartlett's range at the RSPB has the answer. Every piece is simple and elegant, perfect for any mother. And with 20% who could resist?

If you did want to splash out a little more, Scarlett's jewellery is the one for you. Scarlett was established by award-winning British designer Sarah Fenton in 1998. Sarah's jewellery is hand-made in her Brighton mews workshop with personal care and attention. Customers love the detail of the designs and the personal stories behind collections. The jewellery wears wonderfully well, creating signature classics with a timeless, everyday quality - jewellery you'll feel lost without.

The talismanic stories are an essential part of Scarlett's unique identity and many collections are supplied with meaning cards tucked inside the box.
'I'm an eternal romantic so my jewellery celebrates the landmarks of life. Jewellery is so precious and personal, so I design to express the wearer's feelings.'
Sarah Fenton, Designer

One of my personal favourite ideas for any present is to create my very own lucky dip gift box. Start by grabbing an old empty box, some tissue paper and some wrapping paper. Cover the box in the wrapping paper and tear up the tissue to put inside, simple!

Now all you have to do is buy the gifts to put inside.

Here is a suggestion of our favourite small gifts that are perfect for mothers everywhere.

Little things like stopping a tap dripping to cutting your shower time and water usage can make a huge difference!

But here at the RSPB shop we thought we would use this final day of the week to show you products that will not only make sure you are doing good but also treating yourself at the same time.

Start by treating yourself to some gorgeous toiletries. This stack of five mini soap bars is tied with a ribbon. One each of honeysuckle, rose, lemon balm, lavender and honey.

Skinny dipper toiletries from the RSPB. Clean body, clean conscience.
Our luscious, UK made soaps, creams and lotions let you pamper yourself, safe in the knowledge that all the ingredients are good for the planet and good for you.
No rainforests destroyed for palm oil. No parabens seeping through your pores. No harmful phosphates washing down the plug hole - just pure luxury.

RSPB exclusive

Made in the Uk

No parabens

No palm oil

No phosphates

Not tested on animals

http://tinyurl.com/cx2f54l

Secondly, why not invest in a good book?

After a long day at work I know many of you (like me) like to just switch on television and watch a bit of TV, but why not invest in a good book instead? You will save energy by not turning on the TV and feel a bit more relaxed in the meantime.

Here at the RSPB we have over 100 books to keep you occupied, with everything from cookery books to photographic reference books, adult books to children's.

http://tinyurl.com/c7oehzv

Finally, simply do good.

The RSPB’s Good Natured Gifts allow you support many amazing causes throughout the UK and overseas. You can buy the gifts to help plant new trees, help wildlife at RSPB reserves and build habitats for animals.

http://tinyurl.com/auvcnzf

Just to let you know...

The RSPB offers many schemes to help you reduce your gas bills, pet insurance and save money, but the one I want to discuss first is recycling your old mobile phones. There are an estimated 90 million redundant mobile phones lying around in the UK. Many of them will end up in landfill sites. Once in the ground, old mobiles and cartridges can leak toxic substances into the soil, polluting the environment. By giving the RSPB your old phones, ink cartridges, cameras, iPods, games consoles and more you can prevent this happening. The RSPB will then receive cash for every item donated into the recycling appeal. This money helps us carry out vital conservation work and thanks to donations made by RSPB members and supporters, more than £350,000 has been raised since 2005 (2012 RSPB figures).

If you need any more information about going green have a look at the RSPB homepage at www.rspb.org.uk.

Go Green Week - Cut Your Travel

Today's theme for Go Green Week is Cut Your Travel. In the UK, driving a car is one of the largest contributors to our personal carbon emmissions yet one of the simplest things to cut down. Now, we don't ask that you to walk for hours a day to get to work, but perhaps just swap your 2 minute car journey for a 10 minute walk or hop on your bike and cycle to work instead. You'll be amazed at how good you feel!

Here at the RSPB shop, we have a couple of products to help you on your way.

Firstly, don’t be afraid to get yourself out in the rain.

Getting wet from the rain may not be your ideal Sunday stroll, but if you’re dressed right there’s nothing to be afraid of. The RSPB shop now have an outdoors range including mac in a sacs (adult and children) and waterproof electronics cases for your valuables, ensuring that there are no excuses not to walk anywhere!

As the weather starts getting a bit warmer towards Spring why not start gardening again and growing your own fruit and vegetables? You’ll not just be saving money on supermarket bought food, but also enjoy being outdoors and getting healthy.

Start by making sure you have all the essentials and invest in some gorgeous, high-quality garden tools from the Sophie Conran collection.

http://tinyurl.com/c4e4rvv

Growing from seed is the most economical ways to garden, and swapping seeds with other gardeners is a brilliant way to acquire new plants and share your successes.

Keep all your packets of plant seeds together in this handy enamelled metal storage box which has a tight-fitting, hinged lid.

http://tinyurl.com/cfyn2mg

Thirdly, is this fantastic paper plant pot maker.

Making your own paper plant pots has never been easier than with our paper plant pot maker. Turn your old newspapers into biodegradable, economic and eco-friendly pots for your seedlings. You can plant these straight out into the garden, saving you from disturbing the fragile root system. Great fun for children as it teaches an invaluable lesson about sustainable living.

http://tinyurl.com/b2vd2wg

However, as the environment begins to become increasingly affected by the way we live our lives we start to look back on these times with nostalgia. We simply cannot take these issues lightly anymore.

Did you know that UK households throw away almost 30 million tonnes of waste each year? This is equivalent to 3.5 million double-decker buses - a queue of which would stretch from London to Sydney (Australia) and back (UK environment agency, 2010). We also use thousands of litres of water simply through the trap dripping and a regular house loses over 40% of its heat through loft spaces and walls. It’s amazing, isn’t it?

But there are ways for you to do more and the RSPB is right behind you helping you along!

Over the next five days I will be giving you 10 ways to live a greener life, with products to accompany.

Firstly, lets start with a couple of simple things.

1) Take bags to the supermarket.

As most of you will be aware, plastic bags do not biodegrade and therefore can be extremely harmful to animals and wildlife picking up the smaller pieces of plastic. These new reusable birdy bags are stylish as well as being practical and good for the environment!

http://tinyurl.com/amt2k7h

2) Top up your water instead of buying it.

Helping the environment and your wallet has never been so easy. The new range of water bottles from the RSPB are great for any travel and means that you don’t have to keep buying new bottles of water every time you go out.

http://tinyurl.com/a97mwcf

Keep your eyes peeled over the next couple of days to make sure you don't miss out on more fantastic ways you can help to Go Green.

Valentine's day

This valentine's day treat your loved ones with something special.
