Wildlife friendly

Wow, how do you sum up in a couple of paragraphs who you are and why you’re here (on this forum)?

I suppose I’d have to go right back to the beginning. I was brought up deep in the Devonshire countryside, we (my brother and I) spent our childhood playing in the fields, woods, ponds and rivers which surrounded us, wildlife was everywhere (it usually got poked with a stick to see what it would do!)

We chased fireflies, watched Nightjars feigning injury and caught Minnows and Elvers in jam jars. It’s all gone now, the fields are housing estates, the hedges removed to make the fields larger and the ponds have made way for huge open cast mines. It’s very sad and it prompted me to do my bit.

When we bought our current house I combined my love of wildlife, passion for gardening and design skills to create a wildlife haven. The more I learn the more I add and the more wildlife arrives.

Hi Sue

Really grateful for your reply and your suggestions - I knew you would know how!

Alas I have no where near as large a garden as you but I think with what you have suggested I might be able to make a small pit right at the back of the garden where the dunnocks forage and perhaps something out the front as I do have a bit of space there.  Many thanks, speak to you soon,

Hi WF

I hope you don't mind me contacting you this way but need some advice.  I have in fact blogged John Day and Adrian Thomas on the wildlife blogs but not had a reply. Knowing your passion and your great achievements with the wildlife in your garden I thought I would ask you.

I wanted to get some some tree stumps/sections from a house up the road but this unfortunately has not materialised as the owners never seem to be there when I call.  We visited a nature reserve on Saturday and asked them if they could spare some wood if they had it, they offered me some split wood sections (of course I paid for it) but not sure how to set it in the garden.  This isn't what I envisaged but thought I could still use it - what do you reckon is the best way to place them in the garden?  other than the usual pile which we've already got.  The sections admittedly aren't very big just about a foot long by about 5inches thick if that.  Look forward to hearing from you.  Kerry
