"Sharp scratch... ..."
M-squared
Taken on Sunday 21st August 2011. This was a swift, clinical operation. It seemed to be a genuine source of education for a young family that was witnessing the process.

M-squared
Taken on Tuesday 9th August 2011. When I saw that the reflection didn't look quite right, I realised that most of leg L3 was missing. Sorry about the inadequate DofF. I didn't see it until I downloaded. When I checked the Exif data, I found that the aperture was 1 stop bigger than I'd...

Maternal Raft Spider
Dom
Female raft spider carries her egg sac beneath her body. Arne, Dorset, UK. She will carry the egg sac for 2-3 weeks, dipping it in the water to keep it moist until the young spiders hatch. I almost trod on her, which would have been awful. Watch your feet around the pond borders folks!

Dom
Raft spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus) with predated damselfly. Arne, Dorset, UK. A strange amalgam of arachnid and odonata confronted me at the pond today. Raft spiders are famous for ambushing their prey on the water but this one had staked out the pond-side heather instead. With thanks to Rob for...
