  • Photo: Apex Buzzard

Buzzard (Buteo buteo) atop a telegraph pole. Dorset, UK. Seen on the approach to the Arne entry road - not on the Reserve itself. Can anyone tell me whether buzzards are considered "apex" predators? I've never seen anything eat one!

Avocets on the Middlebere channel from Arne. Poole Harbour, Dorset, UK. 12/01/11. They drew steadily nearer to the shore as the light began to fade.

  • Photo: Barn Owl Remains

Severed barn owl beak and feathers (Tyto alba). Dorset, UK. At least that's our best guess. Found near a fenceline in open fields on the Middlebere peninsula across from Arne. A peregrine kill maybe? Would a buzzard take an owl? Possibly the predator tore the beak off as a safety precaution...
  • Photo: Firecrest Fodder

Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus) feeding in holly tree. RSPB Arne, Dorset, UK. Unsurprisingly the UK's smallest bird feeds on something infinitesimally smaller still. In close-up it looks like insect larvae of some variety.
  • Photo: Frozen Firecrest

Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus) in holly tree. RSPB Arne car park, Dorset, UK. Extraordinary, busy little birds. Only an ultra-slow video sequence would do them justice, but that would also require the world's fastest cameraman.
  • Photo: Goldfinch Winter Sun

Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) atop a sunflower head on the habitat-managed winter finch trail at RSPB Arne. 11/01/11.
  • Photo: Hen Harrier Tour

Male hen harrier circling the shores of Poole Harbour. Dorset, UK. (From the Middlebere side of the channel as it flew past the Coombe Heath hide)
  • Photo: Middlebere Peregrine

Peregrine falcon surveying the assembled waders opposite the Coombe Heath hide overlooking the Middlebere channel at Arne. 08/01/11. I've often read about this distinguished visitor in the Arne blog but never seen it on its favourite perch until today. Sadly no-one in the Arne hide to witness...

    Nuthatch at RSPB Arne. 25/02/11.
  • Photo: Spoonbill Blues

Spoonbills in flight over the Middlebere Channel from RSPB Arne. 26/02/11.
  • Photo: Spoonbills Surprised

Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) in flight. Poole Harbour, Dorset, UK. 18/11/11. The appearance of a marsh harrier briefly put these birds to flight before they settled again nearby. (Taken from the Middlebere side of the channel. Also visible from Arne)
  • Photo: Walking the Line

Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) feeding on intertidal mudflats. Poole Harbour, Dorset, UK.
