The Ospreys are sitting on the eggs in beautiful sunshine, mouths open to cool down. With fish coming in at roughly two a day the birds look like a very happy couple. The Heron is also a tireless fisherman and frequently stops off at Pont Croesor for a wriggly eel or two. It was great meeting students from Bangor University here to learn about the project. It’s great to meet people who take such an interest in working to help our stunning countryside. Kate and myself found ourselves acting as chicks (see photo). We can’t wait for the real things. 37 days is the stated incubation period. So we hope the eggs will begin to stir mid may!
Mae’r gweilch y pysgod yn eistedd ar eu hwyau mewn heulwen braf a’u cegau ar agor i oeri. Efo pysgod yn dod i’r nyth dwywaith y dydd, mae’r adar i’w gweld yn hapus iawn. Mae’r crëyr glas yn bysgotwr diflino hefyd, ac yn stopio nawr ac yn y man ger Pont Croesor i dal llysywen neu ddau. Roedd yn dda cyfarfod myfyrwyr o Brifysgol Bangor a ddaeth yma i ddysgu am y project. Mae’n dda cwrdd â phobl sydd efo gymaint o ddiddordeb yng nghefn gwlad a natur. Roedd Kate a minnau wedi cael ein dal yn actio fel cywion (gweler llun), ac mewn 37 diwrnod rydyn ni’n gobeithio y cawn ni’r peth go iawn. Gobeithio bydd yr wyau yn dechrau symud tua chanol Mai!

Although most of the text books state an average incubation date of 37 days, it is not always the case. Most of the books were written before webcams were able to give more accurate information for egg laying dates and incubation periods.
I have been watching the Glaslyn nest since 2004 and the following information is based on the data that has been collected since 2005, when the first webcam was installed.
First chick hatched - 38 days 2005 and 2008, 37 days 2006, 2007 and 2009
Second chick hatched - 36 days 2006, 2007 and 2008, 35 days 2009
Third chick hatched - 35 days 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009
In 2005 one egg did not hatch, it was likely to be the second or third egg laid. Either way the second chick hatched at 35 days.
If you compare statistics at most of the watched nests you will see a similar hatching pattern. I look forward to be able to adding 2010’s statistics.
