First osprey chick flies the nest at Glaslyn / Cyw cyntaf gweilch y pysgod Glaslyn wedi gadael y nyth

The eldest osprey chick (ring number 93) successfully took her first flight on Thursday 8 July at 1.30pm. The youngster was seen furiously flapping her wings for a few days beforehand and during the morning, and then took the plunge with her mother by her side that afternoon. The father was perched on the pole next to the nest watching the whole event. After almost four minutes of flying, both chick and mother came back to the nest, the chick has been seen flying around the immediate vicinity of the nest again this morning.

Geraint Williams Osprey Project Officer at the site said: “We hope the second chick will fly before the end of today or tomorrow, and then the third might fly on Sunday, but the weather is very bad at the moment, and the wind and rain might keep them in their nest for a while longer.” Once all the chicks have fledged they will continue to use the nest as a base and will rely on their father to teach them skills such as hunting and flying, they will stay within the Glaslyn Valley and use the river and the estuary to hone their skills. The family and its new offspring can be seen via the BBC web-cam http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwest/sites/webcams/pages/ospreys.shtml

Llwyddodd cyw hynaf y gweilch y pysgod (modrwy rhif 93) i hedfan am y tro cyntaf dydd Iau 8 Gorffennaf am 1.30 y prynhawn. Gwelwyd y cyw’n curo ei adenydd yn wyllt am ychydig o ddyddiau ymlaen llaw ac yn ystod y bore, yna gadawodd y nyth gyda’i mam wrth ei hochr yn ystod y prynhawn hwnnw.  Roedd y ceiliog yn clwydo ar bolyn wrth ymyl y nyth ac yn gwylio’r holl ddigwyddiad. Ar ôl bron i bedwar munud o hedfan, dychwelodd y cyw a’r fam i’r nyth.  Y bore canlynol, gwelwyd y cyw’n hedfan o amgylch y nyth unwaith eto.

Meddai Geraint Williams, Swyddog Project Gweilch y Pysgod, “Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd yr ail gyw yn hedfan cyn diwedd y dydd neu yfory, ac yna efallai y bydd y trydydd yn hedfan ar ddydd Sul, ond mae’r tywydd yn ddrwg iawn ar hyn o bryd, ac efallai y bydd y gwynt a’r glaw yn eu cadw ar y nyth am ychydig yn fwy.” Wedi i’r cywion i gyd adael y nyth byddant yn parhau i ddychwelyd i’r nyth am gyfnod ac yn dibynnu ar eu tad i ddysgu sgiliau megis hela a hedfan iddynt.  Byddant yn aros o fewn cyffiniau’r Traeth Mawr ac yn defnyddio’r afon Glaslyn a’r aber i ymarfer eu medrau. Gellir gweld y teulu a chywion eleni drwy gyfrwng gwe-gamera’r BBC ar http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northwest/sites/webcams/pages/ospreys.shtml
