An interesting week on the site this week as there has been many visitors, both human and otherwise. A very enthusiastic 9-year-old Wex member saw one of the several Ospreys in the vicinity of the valley over the course of the week. ‘YC’ made short visit to the nest before being hustled on his way up the valley.
A squirrel briefly visited the nest on Sunday whilst the female looked disdainfully on!
Easter Sunday brought out the best in the weather and several people ventured on our Nature Walk down the river.
Other visitors to the site this week were: Hen Harrier, Common Sandpiper; Wood mouse; Brown Hare; Kestrel; Raven; Willow Warbler and even the Heron had a good day’s fishing with the Brown Trout, Salmon and Mullet rising in large numbers in the river.
Mae ‘di bod yn wythnos ddiddorol yma gyda nifer fawr o ymwelwyr – yn bobol ac yn anifeiliaid. Fe welodd aelod brwdfrydig iawn o’r Fforwyr Bywyd Gwyllt un o’r nifer o Weilch sydd wedi bod yn y cyffiniau trwy gydol yr wythnos. Fe ddaeth ‘YC’ ar ymweliad byr i’r nyth cyn cael ei hel o ‘na yn reit ddisymwth i fyny’r Dyffryn.
Ymwelydd arall â’r nyth ar ddydd Sul oedd wiwer a chafodd fawr o groeso gan yr iâr.
Roedd y tywydd yn fendigedig ar Sul y Pasg a ddenodd nifer o bobol i ymuno â ni ar daith gerdded ar hyd yr afon.
Ymwelwyr eraill i’r safle wythnos hon oedd: Bod Tinwen, Pibydd y Dorlan, Cudyll Coch, Cigfran, Telor yr Helyg, Sgwarnog, a Llygoden y Coed. Ac fe fwynhaodd Y Creyr Glas ddiwrnodiau da o bysgota wrth i niferoedd Brithyll, Eog a Hyrddyn gynyddu yn yr afon.
Just after midday today (Thursday, 21 April), an extremely rare and staggering sight occurred at the Glaslyn Osprey site in Porthmadog. Another male osprey was spotted at the nest of the breeding pair.
As RSPB Cymru workers looked on at this fascinating tale of events, a ring was spotted around the leg. The identity of the visiting male was quickly solved as the second chick, hatched on May 17, 2008 by the Glaslyn Osprey breeding pair.
The 2008 chick returned while the breeding male was at Porthmadog Cob fishing. The male visitor did not come empty handed as he dropped a fish in the nest. The female remained in the nest closely guarding her eggs.
It is likely that this three year old bird has returned to the area to find a mate. The female would no longer recognise this bird as being one of her offspring and it could be possible that he would try to mate with her and take over the nest. The fish he brought to the nest was essentially a gift for the female – typical behaviour of a male bird trying to find a mate.
Becky Clews-Roberts People Engagement Manager for RSPB Cymru said: “It was absolutely fascinating to see this happening right before my eyes. It is rare for osprey chicks to return to the exact nest location from where they fledged - we couldn’t quite believe what we were seeing!
There could have been a more hostile reception for the returning chick had the breeding male been present, who would have likely seen him off.
We watched as the female left the nest and the eggs unattended to feed on the fish. We were worried in case the marauder would trample the eggs. Fortunately, she soon returned to guard them while he just sat on the edge of the nest. The events provided such gripping viewing for all our visitors!”
Ychydig ar ol canol dydd heddw (dydd Iau, Ebrill 21ain) fe wleon ni olygfa anhygoel yma ar y safle. Daeth ceiliog Gwalch y Pysgod arall wrth ymyl nyth y par sy’n nythu yma.
Wrth i ni fwynhau ymweliad y gwalch dearth fe nethon ni sylwi ar fodrwy ar ei goes. Doedd e’ ddim yn ddiarth o gwbl! Hwn oedd ail gyw par Glasyn a wnaeth ddeor nol ar Fai 17, 2008!
Fe ddychwelodd cyw 2008 tra bod y ceiliog presennol yn pysgota ger y Cob. A death e’ ddim yn waglaw chwaith. Er mawr syndod i ni gyd fe wnaeth e’ ollwng pysgodyn i mewn i’r nyth fel anrheg i’r iar. Arhosodd yr iar ar y nyth yn gwarchod ei hwyau.
Mae’n debygol bod y ceiliog tair mlwydd oed wedi dychwelyd i’r safle i chwilio am gymar. Fyddai’r iar bresennol ddim yn ei adnabod fel un o’i hepil ac mae’n bosib y byddai e’ ‘di trio cyplysu a hi a chipio’r nyth.
Roedd e’n anhygoel i weld y cyfan yn digwydd o flaen ein llygaid. Mae’n rhywbeth prin i weld cyw yn dychwelyd i’r union nyth lle’i anwyd.
Pe bai’r ceiliog presennol ‘di dychwelyd mae’n siwr y bydde ‘na ‘di bod tipyn o gwmpo mas. Fe nethon ni wylio’r iar yn gadael y nyth i fwyta’r pysgodyn, ac redden ni’n poeni y bydde’r ceiliog ifanc yn sathru’r wyau. Roedd ein hymwelwyr wrth eu bodd i weld y golygfeydd cyffrous yma.
Mae Barcud wedi yn ymweld â ni yn rheolaidd ac mae Cornchwiglod ‘di bod yn arddangos yn y cae tu draw i’r guddfan. Fuodd ‘na dipyn o gyffro ar fore dydd Gwener pan welwyd dau Walch y Pysgod arall yn hedfan ac yn cylchu uwchben y nyth, cyn hedfan i ffwrdd i fyny’r dyffryn. Ar fore dydd Sul hedfanodd Gwalch y Pysgod arall o amgylch y safle tra bod ein Gweilch ni i ffwrdd yn bwydo!
Adar eraill sydd wedi’u gweld wythnos yma:
Tinwen y Garn, Ehedydd, Hywaden Ddanheddog, Hwyaden Frongoch, Llinos Bengoch a Bras Melyn.
Another exciting week at the Glaslyn Osprey site. The male has been doing his fair share of incubating and bringing in lots of large fish.
A Red Kite has been a regular visitor and lapwings have been displaying in the field opposite the hide. There was a bit of a stir early on Friday morning as another two Ospreys were seen flying and circling over the nest, and then headed together further up the valley. On Sunday yet another Osprey flew over the site on the way up the valley whilst our birds were feeding!
Other sightings this week have been:
Wheatear; Skylark; Swallow; Goosander; Red-breasted Merganser; Redpoll and Yellowhammer.
Welsh translation to follow.
All systems go at the Osprey nest this last week. After arriving into beautiful spring sunshine the Snowdonia weather came back with a vengeance, heavy rain and high winds.
On 2nd April the sun shone once again. A passing Osprey flew overhead and while the male displayed the female tucked herself firmly into the nest. No wonder she wasn’t her fighting self, just over one and three-quarter hours later she had laid her first egg. This is possibly one of the earliest Osprey eggs ever laid in Britain! She laid her second on April 5th, and a third at 11.40 on April 8th
Other visitors to the site this week were: Wheatear, Sand Martins, House Martins, Stonechat, Hen Harrier, Kestrel and even a Merlin who was so impressed he brought a friend the following day.
Mae pob peth wedi dechrau’n sydyn ar safle Gweilch y Pysgod. Cyrhaeddodd haul y gwanwyn, ond mewn dim o amser newidiodd tywydd Eryri, ac yn ôl daeth y gwynt a’r glaw.
Tra roedd gwalch dieithr yn hedfan uwchben, cuddiodd y Iar yn y nyth. Ond doedd hynny ddim yn syndod oherwydd mewn llai na dwy awr yn ddiweddarach fe wnaeth hi ddodwy ei hwy cyntaf. O bosib un o’r wyau cynharaf erioed i’w ddodwy gan Walch y Pysgod ym Mhrydain! Cyrhaeddodd yr ail wy ar Ebrill 5ed a’r trydydd ar Ebrill 8fed.
Ymwelwyr eraill i’r safle’r wythnos yma oedd: Tinwen y Garn, Gwennol y Glennydd, Gwennol y Bondo, Clochdar y Cerrig, Boda Tinwen, Cudyll Coch, a hyd yn oed Cudyll Bach a gafodd gymaint o hwyl fe ddoth â ffrind ag e y diwrnod wedyn.
