Glaslyn Community Weekend / Penwythnos Cymunedol Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below.

    27th August

With sightings of our Osprey becoming fewer we think that now they are venturing further afield and may even have gone.  Four were sighted on Friday morning but only two on Saturday.

The young Osprey seem to be catching their own fish more and more as they have been seen flying in the nest vicinity with fish in their talons.

The Community Weekend was quite a success even with the inclement weather. Many people turned out to see the birds off.  Several children helped with the Window Art which proved to be quite absorbing!  Even the Ospreys came to see as we had several sightings over the site on the Sunday.

The kingfishers and the otter have been spotted again this week and the mergansers have been fishing in front of the hide too.

The raffle has been drawn and the winners have been contacted. Thank you to all who took part.

There will be several events over the autumn, so ‘watch this space’!

    27ain Awst

Gan ein bod ni bellach yn gweld llai o Weilch ni’n credu eu bod nhw’n mentro ymhellach i ffwrdd neu, efallai, wedi ymadael hyd yn oed.  Gwelwyd pedwar ohonyn nhw ar fore dydd Gwener ond dim ond dau ar ddydd Sadwrn.

Mae’r Gweilch ifainc yn ymddangos fel pe bai nhw’n dal mwy a mwy o’u pysgod eu hunain, gan eu bod nhw’n cael eu gweld yn aml yng nghyffiniau’r nyth â physgod yn eu crafangau.

Roedd ein Penwythnos Cymunedol yn dipyn o lwyddiant er gwaetha’r tywydd gwael. Daeth nifer o bobol acw i ddweud ffarwel i’r adar. Fe ymgollodd nifer o blant yn y profiad o helpu gyda’r Celf Ffenestr!  Gwelwyd nifer o Weilch yn ystod y penwythnos – yn amlwg roedden nhw am gael gweld beth oedd yn mynd ymlaen.

Mae’r glas y dorlan a’r dwrgwn wedi eu gweld yn ystod yw wythnos ac mae’r hwyadwyddau ‘di pod yn pysgota o flaen y guddfan.

Fe dynwyd y raffl a da ni ‘di cysylltu â’r enillwyr. Diolch i bawb a gymerodd ran.

Fe fyddwn ni’n cynnal nifer o ddigwyddiadau yn ystod yr hydref, felly ‘gwyliwch y gofod’ hwn!

Farewell Party at Glasyn / Parti Ffarwel yng Nglaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

    20th August

The tents are up for the Community Weekend (held on Saturday and Sunday, 20 and 21 August, between 10am and 5pm).  Mediaeval Knights, Craft Stalls and activities all ready to entertain our visitors.

It is nice to give the Glaslyn Osprey family a good farewell party.  Four of the five are about but with the long absence of 78, the middle male chick, we believe he may already be heading south.

The chicks are now ready to migrate but 77 and 79 are choosing to get fitter and stronger and the few extra weeks and days will certainly help these young osprey on their first and most perilous journey in their lives.

The chicks were squabbling over a fish that the male had brought in on Friday morning when they suddenly sank to their ‘knees’. Seconds later the Male and Female were mantling on the nest besides them.  Very shortly afterwards they chased off another osprey. Even this late in the year nest sites are still highly prized and sought after.

The river has been busy with a young kingfisher darting in front of the hide and calling to be fed.  And the otters have also been seen playing under the bridge which is always happy news.

    20fed Awst

Mae’r pebyll wedi’u codi ar gyfer  y Penwythnos Cymunedol (cynhelir ar Sadwrn a Sul, Awst 20fed a’r 21ain rhwng 10yb a 5yp). Mae Marchogion Canoloesol, Stondinau Crefftau a llu o weithagreddau yn barod i ddiddanu pawb.

Mae’n braf medru cynnal parti ffarwel i deulu Gweilch y Pysgod Glaslyn.

Mae’r cywion bellach yn barod i fudo ond mae 77 a 79 ‘di dewis aros am dipyn i geisio dod yn fwy heini ac yn gryfach, ac mae’n sicr y bydd yr ychydig wythnosau a dyddiau ychwanegol hyn yn helpu’r Gweilch ifainc ar eu taith gyntaf a mwyaf peryglus yn eu bywydau.

Fe fu’r cywion yn ffraeo dros bysgodyn roedd y ceiliog ‘di dod ag e’ i’r nyth ar ddydd Gwener, pan gwympodd y ddau yn sydyn i’w ‘pengliniau’. Eiliadau yn ddiweddarach dyma’r ceiliog a’r iâr yn eu gochel o dan eu hadenydd ar y nyth. Yn fuan wedyn dyma’r rhieni yn erlid Gwalch y Pysgod arall o’r cyffiniau. Mae galw mawr am safleodd nythu hyd yn oed mor hwyr â hyn yn y tymor – mae’n amlwg eu bod nhw’n werthfawr iawn i’r Gweilch.

Mae’r afon ‘di bod yn brysur gyda glas y dorlan ifanc yn gwibio o flaen y guddfan ac yn galw ar ei rieni i’w fwydo.  Ac mae’r dyfrgwn wedi eu gweld yn chwarae o dan y bont sydd wastad yn newyddion o lawenydd mawr.

    Autumn on the way!

    13th August

Following an early spring we fear that autumn is taking the same trend.  Swallows are chattering and berries bursting on the trees already.

The weather is changing.  It may encourage our very mature 13-week-old Ospreys to think of warmer climes.  On the positive; Wednesday, with the rain bucketing down, we had 4 fish delivered by the male to the nest – up from the usual 1-2.  Maybe chicks 77 and 79 were relying more on their very experience father to catch dinner in such difficult conditions.

The female was last seen on the nest on Tuesday (9th) when there were 7 Ospreys in the valley. Our family playing host to two others who may have already decided to travel south. Perhaps she too will be saying ‘Hwyl fawr’ to her Welsh home soon.

Other migrant birds, a pair of Redstarts has been regularly feeding off invertebrates on the nest before their equally long journey south.

Other news from the site:- Congratulations to Glaslyn Osprey Volunteer Judith Compton for winning ‘Welsh Learner of the Year’ at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham. – Da Iawn!!!

Unusual Visitors at Glaslyn / Ymwelwyr Anarferol Yn Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

    5th August 2011

The eldest and youngest of the Glaslyn brood are proving very lazy.  Everyday there is a scrap for the mullet that the male continues to provide. 78 (the middle chick) seems well on his way to becoming self-sufficient and independent. He was last seen on one of our Special Osprey Walks. (Call the site 07759 824 898 for more information on these unique walks).

The female has been seen on the nest seemingly finding it difficult to cut the habit of being brought a meal by her partner. Even when he hid the fish from her she didn’t get the hint!

On Thursday morning an Osprey with very unusual distinctive pale tail feathers, was seen carrying branches and investigating the nest. It was soon shown the error of its way by the female.  With luck we will see it again in the valley.

The male is often seen flying over the site with one of the chicks following.

Geraint (the site manager) and the Ospreys have been filmed this week with actress, Alison Steadman (‘Pamela’ from the hit comedy series ‘Gavin & Stacey’).  Look out for the programme about navigation and migration on BBC2 during the week beginning 19th September.

     5ed Awst, 2011

Mae’r hynaf a’r ieuengaf o gywion Glaslyn yn profi i fod yn ddiog iawn. Mae ‘na frwydr yn ddyddiol rhyngddynt am yr hyrddod mae’r ceiliog yn parhau i gyflenwi i’r teulu. Mae 78 (y cyw canol) yn ymddangos fel pe bai ar ei ffordd i fod yn hunan-gynhaliol ac annibynnol. Fe welwyd ef tro diwethaf ar un o’n Teithiau Cerdded Arbennig. (Galwch y safle 07759 824 898 am ragor o fanylion am y teithiau cerdded arbennig yma).

Mae’r iâr wedi ei gweld ar y nyth ac yn ymddangos fel pe bai hi’n eich chael hi’n anodd i dorri’r arfer o ddisgwyl i’w phartner ddod â’i phrydau o fwyd iddi. Doedd hi hyd yn oed ddim ‘di deall ei awgrym pan ddaru o guddio’r pysgodyn oddi wrthi!

Ar fore dydd Iau fe welwyd Gwalch y Pysgod gyda phlu cynffon anarferol iawn o olau yn cario canghennau ac yn archwilio'r nyth.  Fe ddysgodd yr iâr wers iddo! Gyda ‘chydig o lwc efallai welwn ni fe eto yn y dyffryn.

Mae’r ceiliog yn aml yn cael ei weld yn hedfan dros y safle gydag un o’r cywion yn ei ddilyn.

Yn ystod yr wythnos cafodd Geraint (rheolwr y safle) a’r Gweilch eu ffilmio yng nghwmni’r actores enwog, Alison Seadman (sef ‘Pamela’ yn y rhaglen gomedi  Gavin & Stacey’). Fe fydd y rhaglen, ynglyn â mudo a mordwyo ar BBC2 yn ystod yr wythnos sy’n cychwyn 19eg Medi.
