February 5th

With even colder weather we have been lucky here in the Valley as we have (as yet) not had the snow, although we had no water for tea one day as the water pipes had frozen! However, the little birds seem to be making the most of the feeders and the House Sparrows have even been bringing nesting material into the hide. The Wren also looked as though she was on the lookout for a nesting site in the hide!

We have had some new visitors this week – hopping along the ground in front of the shop were two Meadow Pipits. The Merlin was seen skimming the riverbank searching for prey and the Sparrowhawk gave a brilliant display directly over the hide on Sunday. Fortunately this time the Mistle Thrush evaded capture. We also had a very brief glimpse of a small mammal collecting the seed from beneath the feeders on the riverbank – we hope it returns so we can have a better views next time.

Fodd bynnag, mae’r adar bach ‘di bod yn manteisio ar yr hadau yn ein bwydwyr ac mae'r Adar y Tô wedi bod yn dod â deunydd nythu i mewn i'r guddfan hyd yn oed. Gwelwyd Cuddyll Bach yn sgimio lan yr afon yn chwilio am fwyd a rhoddodd y Gwalch Glas arddangosfa wych reit uwchben y guddfan ar ddydd Sul. Trwy lwc, fe lwyddodd y Brych y Coed i ddianc rhagddo tro ‘ma. Cawsom ni gipolwg sydyn iawn ar famal bach yn casglu'r hadau o dan y bwydwyr ar lan yr afon.
How did you do with your Big Garden Bird Watch? Our count was 18 Chaffinch; 12 Great Tit; 11 Blue Tit, amongst smaller numbers of other species. The Whooper Swans were very close to the hide and were a wonderful sight as they lifted and flew into the adjacent field. They were quite hard to see as they were set against a white cloud against the white snow on the mountain! Several of the Mute Swan greet us as we arrive on site as they know that we will be feeding them too.

Another regular visitor is the Buzzard who has taken to sitting in the tree in the car park. Perhaps he has decided to be sentry to see who arrives at the site? Several Duck have also been active on the river and the Heron was seen successfully fishing under the bridge with a wriggling eel dangling from his beak.

Fe wnethom ni gyfri 18 Ji-Binc; 12 Titw Mawr; 11 Titw Tomos Las, ymhlith niferoedd llai o rywogaethau eraill. Fe ddaeth Elyrch y Gogledd yn agos iawn at y guddfan a chawsom olygfa hyfryd ohonynt wrth iddynt godi fel un i hedfan i gae cyfagos. Roedden nhw’n eithaf anodd i’w gweld gan eu bod nhw’n hedfan o flaen cwmwl gwyn a’r eira gwyn ar y mynydd! Mae nifer o'r Elyrch Dof yn ein cyfarch ni wrth i ni gyrraedd y safle gan eu bod yn gwybod y byddwn yn eu bwydo nhw hefyd.

Ymwelydd rheolaidd arall yn ystod yr wythnos oedd y Bwncath sydd wedi dewis eistedd yn y goeden yn y maes parcio.
Another week of changeable weather but on Tuesday the Starlings performed wonderfully, and for about half an hour small clouds of black were circling over the site and amalgamating into a crescendo of one large murmuration before they settled down to roost. Unfortunately the clouds did not keep clear long enough to give us views of the constellations, but kept away long enough for us to have good clear sightings of Venus and Jupiter and several other large stars. Many thanks to the enthusiastic volunteer who brought down his telescope and laptop complete with star charts.

There has been a brief sighting of a tree creeper this week and several Buzzards treated us to some wonderful aerobatics above the site. The small birds continue to delight us with their busy, noisy and bustling visits to the feeders.

Ionawr 22ain

Fuodd hi’n wythnos arall o dywydd cyfnewidiol, ond ar ddydd Mawrth fe wnaeth y Drudwenod berfformio yn hyfryd ac am tua hanner awr fuon nhw’n cylchu fel cymylau duon uwchben ein safle, cyn cyfuno mewn un crescendo mawr cyn iddynt setlo i lawr i glwydo. Yn anffodus, fe ddaeth cymylau eraill ar draws yr awyr i rwystro ni rhag gweld y cytserau, ond serch hynny fe welon ni olygfeydd da o blanedau Fenws ac Iau a nifer o sêr mawr eraill.
With the weather definitely having a seasonal chill and the puddles icing over we have had lots of the little birds active at the feeders.
On the river the swans and ducks have been frequent visitors and even a little grebe popped up briefly. The swan numbers have been constant for the last few weeks at around 35 Whooper Swan and 50 Mute Swan.

Welcome to a new year and although the weather has not been kind, spring seems to be on the way too as the daffodils are pushing their way out of the ground. The little birds were very vocal this weekend and the Wren flitting about around the site too. A large flock of starlings gambolling over the site were quite a sight and we hope to see more of them on January 17th for the ‘Starlings & Stars’ event held in conjunction with the BBC series ‘Stargazing Live, so come along if you are in the area.

Croeso i flwyddyn newydd, ac er nad yw’r tywydd wedi bod yn garedig, mae’n debyg bod y gwanwyn ar y ffordd gan fod y cennin Pedr yn gwthio’u ffordd allan o’r ddaear. Roedd yr adar mân yn llafar iawn y penwythnos hwn, ac roedd y dryw yn gwibio o amgylch y safle hefyd.
There was a large murmuration of starlings locally too which caused a bit of a stir when they landed on the road and took up about 100 yards of it, bringing the traffic to a standstill! They then took off, swooped around broke into two groups and landed in the fields on either side of the road. The occupants of the vehicles took a little time to gather their thoughts before proceeding with their journey – Brilliant!

The Curlews were very active this weekend too. The site will be closed from Friday December 23rd for the Christmas break but will re-open for the weekends from January 6th.

Yna, fe hedfanon nhw i ffwrdd, rhannu i mewn i ddau grwp cyn glanio yn y caeau ar y naill ochr y ffordd. Fe gymerodd ychydig o amser i yrrwyr y ceir i gaslglu eu meddyliau cyn mynd ymlaen â'u taith - Gwych!

Fe fuodd y gylfinirod yn weithgar iawn dros y penwythnos hefyd. Bydd y safle ar gau o ddydd Gwener, Rhagfyr 23ain ar gyfer gwyliau'r Nadolig, ond bydd yn ail-agor ar gyfer penwythnosau o Ionawr 6ed.

Nadolig Llawen oddi wrth bawb yn Glaslyn!

With the river rising due to the amount of rain recently it has been even more encouraging to see the wildlife out and about stocking up for the winter. There were three snipe in the field near to the river and the numbers of geese and swan are increasing daily. Even with the level of the available grazing being reduced by water they continue to arrive.

There has been a lot of flotsam washed down the river and being entangled at the waters’ edge by the low branches of the trees. These are forming little rafts that the smaller birds are exploiting for the grubs and insects brought down with them.

Mistle Thrush, starling and fieldfare have also been busy around the site and have chosen to frequent a holly tree by the feeders, which has still some berries – not for long perhaps!

A pair of Buzzards were making use of the cow churned ground in the field opposite to gather a good meal of earthworms, and they even made use of the post by the side of the river for spying out more delicacies.

The bird feeder was a mass of colour as the birds squabbled to get their share of the food and they were even queuing up on the adjacent branches awaiting a space.

A Little Egret flew directly overhead on Sunday and immediately afterwards a flock of Long-tailed Tits chattered by, worth getting cold and wet for!

The starlings and Curlew have been increasing in numbers too and have been very active in the field across the river watched over by a female buzzard sitting in the tree nearby. Whilst walking by the river to get a better view of the geese and swans we were surprised by a group of long tailed tits feeding on the tree by the path.

Visitors to the feeders this week (once we had rescued them out of the water!) have been the usual Blue Tit; Great Tit; Chaffinch and Greenfinch. The birdsong along the riverbank has been better than a classical concert!

There’s been plenty of activity at the site this week. The wildlife has kept our visitors entertained and the staff and volunteers have been busy catching up with some of the maintenance work around the site. The robin has been seen following them as they worked waiting for the worms that are unearthed, saving him the effort. There were sightings of several curlew in the adjacent field again this week, and a trickle of more whooper swans arriving to spend the winter with us. The goosander and little grebe are still fishing alongside the hide, and a grey heron chanced his luck wandering amongst the herd of cows on the river bank, but was finally seen off by them.

We are still seeing lots of the smaller birds on the feeders and the call of the pheasant was heard close to the site too. Wren and long-tailed tits investigating the trees on either side of the hide provided one young visitor with lots of interest. The birdseed storage has seen some ‘small animal activity’ so the seed has been consigned to tubs.

With a complete change in the weather and soft, warm breezes it feels more like spring than autumn and the wildlife must be thinking it too. We have had sightings of common darter, ladybirds and still lots of flies and bugs around the field. This has encouraged lots of the little birds to venture closer to the site and we have had some lovely views of the wren hopping along the riverbank and an aerial display by a large flock of around 100 fieldfare and redwing. A pair of little grebe have also been feeding in the river by the hide.

The whooper swans are slow to return and to date the largest number seen has been around 25. When the weather turns a little colder we’re sure the numbers will increase. Ymwelydd arall i’r safle yn ystod yr wythnos oedd Barcud Coch mawreddog yn hedfan yn ddiymdrech uwch ein pennau.

New Visitor to Glaslyn / Ymwelydd newydd i'r Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

6th November

Our winter wildlife continues to entertain our visitors. A flock of long tailed tits darted across the field chattering along the way, the blue tits and great tits have again been very busy on the feeders. Also spotted on the feeders were some greenfinches.

In the field across the river the curlew were back and gave a lovely display when they took off and circled the field. The heron tried to get in on the act too and was unceremoniously shouldered out of the way by the cows feeding there.

A new sighting on the river, amongst the goosander, ducks and swans was a little grebe, which kept us entertained for over an hour, vanishing suddenly into the reeds. On one of our walks we found a stunning little egret – a bird which would have been a great rarity a few years ago but is now spreading through Wales.

The number of swans has increased a little but we are still awaiting the main flock. Who knows – they may arrive this week.

6ed Tachwedd

Mae bywyd gwyllt y gaeaf ar y safle yn parhau i ddiddanu ein hymwelwyr. Mae nifer fawr o ditwod cynffon hir ‘di bod yn sboncio ar draws y cae yn clebran ar hyd y ffordd ac mae’r titwod tomos las a'r titwod mawr wedi bod yn brysur iawn unwaith eto ar ein bwydwyr. Gweldwyd llinosiaid gwyrdd ar y bwydwyr hefyd.

Yn y cae ar draws yr afon mae’r gylfinirod yn ôl ac wedi bod yn arddangos yn hyfryd wrth iddynt hedfan a chylchu o amgylch y cae. Mae'r crëyr ‘di bod yn ceisio hawlio ein sylw hefyd ond cafodd ei hel o’r cae yn ddismwth gan y gwartheg yn bwydo yno.

Ymhlith yr hwyiaid danheddgog, yr hwyaid a’r elyrch fe welwyd aderyn newydd ar yr afon yr wythnos ‘ma – yr wyach fach, a wnaeth ein diddanu ni am dros awr cyn diflannu yn sydyn i mewn i'r cyrs. Ar i’n o’n teithiau cerdded fe welon ni greyr bach hynod o hardd. Ychydig o flynyddoedd yn ôl fe fydde’r aderyn hwn ‘di bod yn olygfa hyn o brin, ond erbyn hyn mae’n lledaenu ar draws Cymru.

Mae’r nifer o elyrch wedi cynyddu ychydig, ond rydym yn dal i aros am y niferoedd mawr i’n cyrraedd ni. Pwy a ŵyr – efallai ddown nhw’r wythnos yma.

Ghostly Glaslyn / Bwganod Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

30th October 2011

This weekend saw some strange visitors to the site – witches, skeletons and pumpkin heads!! Children entered into the ‘spirit’ of the weekend and had an interesting time dissecting Barn Owl pellets to see what animals the bird had been eating. One of the pellets yielded 3 small mammal skeletons; the concentration of the youngsters was intense.

The Bramling visited again this week with lots of activity by the Goldfinches, Great tits, Blue tits and Sparrows on the feeder. A Tree creeper was also spotted on a nearby tree. One little fluffy sparrow was so cheeky he came and sat on the handrail of the hide watching the visitors watching him!

On the river the Goosander pair and Swans caught everyone’s attention and the fish were jumping too. No less than five Curlew feeding on the opposite bank and a flock of twenty further down the river was a wonderful view. We also saw a siege of Herons in the adjacent field.

30ain Hydref

Y penwythnos hwn gwelwyd ymwelwyr dieithr i'r safle – gwrachod, sgerbydau a phennau pwmpen!! Fe aeth y plant i mewn i 'ysbryd' y penwythnos gan fwynhau eu hunain yn dyrannu pelenni y Dylluan Wen i weld pa anifeiliaid roedd yr aderyn wedi eu bwyta. Roedd un o'r pelenni yn cynnwys sgerbydau 3 o famaliaid bychain; doedd dim problem cael y bobl ifanc i ganolbwyntio ar eu gwaith!

Fe wnaeth y Pinc y Mynydd ymweld â ni unwaith eto yr wythnos hon ac fe fu’r Nicos, y Titwod Mawr, y Titwod Tomos Las ac Adar y Tô yn brysur iawn ar y bwydwr. Gwelwyd Dringwr Bach ar goeden gyfagos hefyd. Roedd un Aderyn y Tô bach fflwfflyd mor eofn fe benderfynodd eistedd ar ganllaw’r guddfan a gwylio’r ymwelwyr yn ei wylio ef!

Ar yr afon fe wnaeth y pâr o Hwyiaid Danheddog a’r Elyrch ddal sylw pawb ac fe fu’r pysgod yn neidio hefyd. Roedd gweld 5 Gylfinir yn bwydo ar y lan gyferbyn ac ugain arall ymhellach i lawr yr afon yn olygfan hyfryd. Fe welon ni hefyd lwyth o Grehyrod yn y cae cyfagos.

Winter visitors arrive at Glaslyn / Ymwelwyr y gaeaf yn cyrraedd Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

Although the weather has been very unpredictable this week with brilliant sunshine then hailstones, the wild life in the valley has been stunning. With all the usual visitors we have also seen our first brambling and a flock of about 200 Redwings tumbling and playing above the hide.

During one of our walks on Sunday we saw cormorant, snipe, and a group of around 20 Curlew! Several photographers have been lucky to get some great photos of the little birds in flight around the feeder in the tree as they were queuing up on the branches waiting their turn for a space to feed

A Shelduck put in an appearance on the river, and because of the spraying of fertiliser in the adjacent fields large flocks of Black Headed and Herring Gulls were feeding close by.

Er bod y tywydd wedi bod yn anwadal yr wythnos hon gyda heulwen disglair un funud a chenllysg y funud nesaf, mae’r bywyd gwyllt yn y dyffryn wedi bod yn wych. Ymhlith ein hymwelwyr arferol rydym hefyd wedi gweld ein pinc y mynydd cyntaf ac oddeutu 200 o goch dan adain yn plymio ac yn chwarae uwchben y guddfan.

Yn ystod un o'n teithiau cerdded ar y dydd Sul fe welson ni filidowcar, gïach a grŵp o tua 20 Gylfinir! Mae nifer o ffotograffwyr wedi bod yn lwcus i gael nifer o luniau gwych o'r adar bach yn hedfan o gwmpas y bwydwr yn y goeden wrth iddyn nhw giwio ar y canghennau yn aros eu tro am le i fwydo.

Fe wnaeth hwyaden yr eithin ymddangos ar yr afon ac, oherwydd y chwistrellu gwrtaith sydd wedi bod yn mynd yn ei flaen ar y caeau cyfagos, mae heidiau mawr o wylanod pen-ddu a phenwaig wedi bod yn yn bwydo gerllaw.

Glaslyn Swans / Elyrch Glaslyn

Fersiwn Gymraeg islaw / Welsh language version below

The fine weather over the weekend brought a few visitors to the site to see our abundant wildlife at the site. Two whooper swans have taken to visiting and feeding in the pool in front of the hide and a pair of mute swans and cygnet actually came up the bank to the hide! Were they watching us watching them?!

The otter was playing and calling earlier in the week but we only caught glimpses of it, and the heron continues to fish under the bridge. The starlings are now grouping and even a snipe was spotted in the field. These, along with the increased activity of the smaller birds on the feeders by the hide and across from the tables, have given us plenty to see.

Fe ddaeth y tywydd braf dros y penwythnos â nifer o ymwelwyr i'r safle i weld y bywyd gwyllt toreithiog sydd ganddom ni yma. Ai nhw oedd yn gwylio ni neu ni oedd yn gwylio nhw?!

Roedd y dyfrgi yn chwarae ac yn galw yn gynharach yn yr wythnos ond dim ond ambell i gipolwg ohono gawsom ni, ac mae’r crëyr glas yn parhau i bysgota o dan y bont. Mae'r drudwennod yn awr yn ymgynnull efo’u gilydd ac fe welsom ni gïach hyd yn oed mewn cae gerllaw.
