With our FEED THE BIRDS OPEN DAY this Sunday 24th October, I thought that we should focus on what you might like to eat.
Lets start with insects. They are nice and crunchy and favourites of the 58 black-tailed godwits that are around at the moment. Also liked by our snipe, shoveler, shelduck, redshanks, ruff, long-tailed tits in the hedgerow and our one goldeneye which is currently favouring the screen at ousefleet.
If seeds are your thing - then you will be joining the group of birds such as tree sparrows that can be found in great numbers at our feeding station.
If you like fish then you could join the little grebes on xerox or first for a quick snack.
Sparrowhawks and peregrines like small birds like this ruff that this happy peregrine caught a few weeks back.
A nice mammal like a vole would be on the cards if you were a barn owl or a kestrel (lots of these at the moment!).
How about some juicy berries then - fieldfares and redwings are now arriving ready to start on this wonderful juicy supply found along our hedgerow.
If you prefer something like grass or potatoes then you would be joining the likes of the pink-footed geese, whooper swans (just arriving now - 5 went past on Wednesday with a black swan following!), wigeon and our roe deers.
If you are game for anything then you would be like the marsh harriers (16 came into roost the other night!) or the grey heron that discovered the newly cut areas first out on xerox - these eat anything they can catch. Though teals remain difficult for our harriers!
Ok If you are a bit hungry then I recommend the catering van that will be present in the car park this weekend offering real warm food and hot drinks for our human visitors.

Hi Michael, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but I can't find anywhere else! Could you let me know where would be closest to Sheffield that I could see a murmuration of starlings? I've never seen one but would love to. I visit Blacktoft now and then - do you get them there?
Many thanks
Hi, check out my starling blog and comments for information. I have also discovered that there was a roost in Sheffield city centre but can't work out exactly where.
