Fantastic marsh harriers and avocets

Well the marsh harriers and the avocets have been stealing the show this week.

Out of the two, it has to be the marsh harrier that tops it.  Watching them from reception has been absolutely amazing.  We now have at least 7 birds taking over the territory between xerox and townend.  Best viewed from reception or first if you are trying to take a photo.  They have been chasing each other, displaying high above the reeds and recently starting to bring some material into that spot in the reed.  The action has been almost constant for the past week or so.  Out of the 7 marsh harriers, we now have 3 magnificent coloured males.

The other bird of the week is the avocets.  These are now often seen up at Ousefleet or looking at the islands on marshland where they nest.

This past week has also seen the arrival of two more of our spring arrivals - swallow on Friday 25th March and House Martin on Tuesday 29th March.  Sand martins and chiffchaff are already in.

Lastly we have seen quite a few buzzards over the reserve this week (this is quite unusual for us) - we expect they are feeding on those toads that invaded last week.  And we had another red kite sighting on Tuesday!
