As the well known saying goes Ne'er cast a clout till May is out, so its a damn good job that I had'nt stopped wearing my winter woollies yet! And winter certainly seems to have arrived with avengeance at the moment with the thick covering of snow showing no signs of thawing, and also the added insult of thick Humber fog. So please note that although the reserve remains open I would recommend that you stay away until we give the nod that conditions have improved considerably! Hopefully things will start to change by the weekend.
The birds as you would expect are feeling the cold with plenty of water rails showing around the little bits of water that remain although one got a little more than it bargained for judging by the remains that were left by a male marsh harrier next to the track! (see below!) The fog has limited too much more birding but there has stil been regular hen harrier about and a mix of winter thrushes going through.
And finally the Sands is always entertaining during cold weather as birds often behave a little different than normal as seen yesterday with this cheeky robin making a bit of a bum deal with the Koniks!
