Raptor Watch 19th December

Raptor Watch 19th December

Sunday's "Raptor Watch" again produced the goods with a fantastic display of hunting from a local barn owl.....

After several close passes the owl decided to move on and off it went to nearby pastures ...

A solitary woodcock flew out of the marsh heading in the same direction ... I wonder if they know something we don't?

A suprise sighting was that of a sparrowhawk ... with a blackbird between its talons, nobody saw this happen thus demonstrating how stealthy these marvellous hunters can be.

As if that wasn't enough several ringtail hen harriers and a peregrine hunted the creeks of the marsh flushing hundreds of small birds, waders and ducks.

Then to top it all off roughly 750 pink-footed geese moved around before settling on a distant spot on the marsh ...

The sunset warmed us slightly but it wasn't long before the cold got the better of us and we made our tracks into the night (and snow)

Next pne is set for Sunday 16th January starting at 2.30pm see you there.

  • The RSPB intends to open Inner Marsh Farm every day apart from Christmas Day.  However, if conditions are severe then the reserve may close due to dangerous car parking and slippery footpaths at short notice.  The office phone number (0151 336 7681) will be partially operational over this period. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter – Merry Christmas.
