Wagtails and Water voles!
Lyndsey
There is a lot of activity at Elmley Marshes at the moment. The drive down to the car park is fantastic with close views of displaying Lapwing and Redshanks wandering closely along the track. I can confidently say you are very likely to see at least one stunning Yellow Wagtail and if you are sharp eyed...

Grumpy Cows

Many may have noticed this year that we have had no trouble raising our water levels. Plenty of rain has meant that the reserve is possibly looking the wettest that most can remember. This is fantastic as it has created a great habitat for the winter bird’s arrival. It also makes our days much...

Not Elmley
Gordon Allison
A friend of mine came over to the island today to do a bit of winter birding. The recent cold snap has frozen the reserve, with the result that most of the bird interest stays outside the seawall on the Swale. As a result, we decided to head elsewhere today. First stop was the beach at Minster, on the...

June 10th
Gordon Allison
The showery weather continues, although I think I'll still have to put some more water onto the Flood. I went out this evening to check on one of the cows out there. It was OK, but some of the pools are looking low, despite the rain. But the shallow water is what the avocets love and i counted a...

...almost autumn!
Gordon Allison
The seasons are changing - ever so subtly, but changing they are. It's only the end of May, but the first post-breeding lapwing flocks are starting to gather. These are birds that for whatever reason have not bred this year, or have tried to breed unsuccessfully. As June progresses, their numbers...

Sweet precipitation!
Gordon Allison
The rain finally arrived at Elmley on Thursday afternoon - only showers, but some of them heavy enough to make a difference. We got just over 10mm, which wasn't enough to wet up areas that have dried out, but will keep the remaining wet bits wet a bit longer. Crucial for the many wader chicks that...

Just a day late this time
Gordon Allison
I've spent the last couple of days fairly intensively scouring the reserve for broods of lapwing chicks. In the end, we found a total of 22 broods, totalling 42 chicks - not great, but better than last year & considering the way the water is disappearing, I'm quite pleased with the total...

Latest catch up
Gordon Allison
Can't believe it's been almost 2 weeks since my last blog - time just seems to zip past these days! Going around the reserve today checking the livestock, there were numerous familiar faces: there's still one spoonbill hanging around the pools east of the Flood, although the strong wind today...

The past week

Having been away over the bank holiday at Spurn Bird Obs (am I the only person in the world not to have seen "that" dress?) and only now seeming to get 10 minutes to myself since my return, I thought it was about time that we had a bit of a catch up. The drought continues: there was 0.3mm...

Up with the lark

Today was the first "field by field" census of the year for this breeding season. We carry out 3 of these to record the breeding populations across the site, walking through every field & aiming to get to within 100m of all points on the reserve. Elmley's quite a big area, so to cover...

Don't you just love bird watchers vernacular? The spoonbill was still on the Flood today, as were 2 spotted redshank and a ruff, amongst all the nesting activity of avocets, lapwing & redshank + a variety of ducks & assorted other waterfowl. A single whimbrel was in the field near Southfleet...

Migrants

Churlish I know, but despite the lovely weather, I wish it would rain! It's hard to maintain a wetland reserve in tip-top condition when there's a singular lack of the wet stuff. I'm still running pumps to top up the water that we've accumulated over the winter, but sunny skies &...

Dull

I've not been too inspired to write much over the past few days, as the weather here has been so blah. I'm starting to forget what a blue sky looks like! It's just mist & low cloud (not even any much-needed rain) and a nagging northerly breeze. Saturday's swallow is history, although...

A promising start went downhill fairly rapidly after lunch, with mist, drizzle & a fresh northerly breeze arriving. I was out bright & early & it was a pleasure, with lapwing and now the first redshank displaying over the marsh and the "kluut, kluut" of the avocets on the Flood getting...

First swallow
Gordon Allison
A nice sunny morning, with a light south-easterly blowing and the years first swallow duly arrived. Up until recently, I'd never seen a swallow in March before. Now it's almost expected. Displaying lapwing are becoming ever more obvious and even the redshank are starting to make a bit of noise...

Motney Hill - 5th March
Gordon Allison
Decided that I needed a haircut today, so as my hairdresser is in Medway, it seemed rude not to call in at the Medway reserves at Motney Hill on the way back. Pulling my hat tightly down to keep a keen north-easterly breeze from getting to my newly exposed ears, I realised that i had timed my visit just...

26th January
Gordon Allison
A thoroughly dismal day on the reseve today: low cloud, drizzle and a nagging northeasterly breeze. But of course, diesel pumps and livestock and other bits & bobs need attention, so we wrapped up warm & ventured out. Not a great day for observing birds of prey - I managed a couple of sightings...

Wader extravaganza
Gordon Allison
You never can tell. Down to the reserve mid-morning to do various pump-related jobs and I paused on the counterwall at Wellmarsh and scanned the Flood. It wasn't an especially high tide today, but the pool in front of the hide was covered in waders. So I detoured briefly to get a count. Half an hour...

Here we go again..!
Gordon Allison
As predicted, more freezing conditions and another dollop of snow hit the reserve over the weekend. The access track is still passable with care, but the reserve was pretty empty today. There were a few flocks of lapwing roosting on the frozen water bodies and one small group of golden plover in with...

With Nat doing the honours with the livestock today, I took myself off Sheppey (first time since 27th Nov!) to have a look on the Medway estuary. Specifically at Motney Hill RSPB reserve. This often overlooked reserve is situated on the south side of the estuary, near Riverside Country Park by Gillingham...

Having missed out on the snow that's been sweeping the country further north, Kent finally got the covering that's been on the cards for a while now. Funnily enough, there was only the one car visited the reserve today: they made it to the carpark, but didn't venture any further...

I was just concentrating on the waders today as the tide was quite high, so there ought to have been a few on the reserve. However, nothings certain in this game, so there wasn't quite as many as I was expecting. Best were 21 spotted redshank on the Flood, the highest count for a while. Most are...
