A friend of mine came over to the island today to do a bit of winter birding. The recent cold snap has frozen the reserve, with the result that most of the bird interest stays outside the seawall on the Swale. As a result, we decided to head elsewhere today. First stop was the beach at Minster, on the...

Another Snow Bunting
Visited Elmley on Sunday afternoon and was fortunate to get some good close ups of a Snow Bunting which was by the seawall past Southfleet turn and just before the bend to go round to the Swale Hide. When i looked back at the timings of the pictures it was actually 7 minutes that the bunting was hoping...

I see light at the end of the tunnel. Hope it's not a train...

The juvenile spoonbill was again on the Flood today over the high tide period, although showing a little more distantly than on Sunday. The windier conditions today meant that the tide was higher than forecast and an impressive wader roost built up on the islands at Wellmarsh hide. The majority were...

The single female snow bunting was still present at it's favoured patch by Swale hide today (22nd). But while we're welcoming our winter visitors, don't forget that there are still summer birds heading south: also around the reserve today a swallow, a wheatear and a chiffchaff. A ring...

..here's one I missed earlier
Out bright & breezy this morning to check the livestock and to instruct our digger driver on the days jobs, I drove round the corner of the seawall at Swale hide & flushed a snow bunting from a small patch of saltmarshy vegetation near the hide. "Great! The first of the winter" I thought...

photo taken 20/10/10 so lucky to get this shot on the path outside the Swal hide, unfortunatly it was 5.30pm and the sun was behind the sea wall so light was very poor, still can't complain, great end to a great day. (equipment can-450d sig500)
