What I love about watching wildlife is that there is always something else to learn about one species or another. We were rather shocked to receive these photos during the week:

It’s a hairy dragonfly chomping on a four spot chaser. I knew dragonflies were predators but I never knew that they went for their “own kind” so to speak. Absolutely incredible scenes! Thank you to Graham for sending them over.
As promised, here is a photo of one of the young great spotted woodpeckers that have been visiting the visitor centre feeders recently:

We had a very enjoyable walk with the Lakenheath Fen kingfishers (the reserve’s Wildlife Explorers club) yesterday evening. Highlights included two barn owls hunting over the washland and a hobby hunting nearby. Some of the group also saw an otter scamper across the riverbank footpath. That’ll teach the rest of us for watching barn owls hunt!
This morning, two golden orioles were seen in West Wood. A hobby was perched nearby and a red kite flew over. Several dragonflies were on the wing including scarce chaser and hairy dragonfly. We got a great view of the latter eating a ladybird. We hope to see you soon.
