Are you aware of our free weekend walks? Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year, regardless of weather, our guided walks set off from the RSPB shop at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm, led by knowledgeable volunteers.
They last about an hour, and at this time of year the wide array of fungi in Vyrnwy's woods, as well as the chance to practise tree identification skills, provide plenty of interest and challenge. You'll also find the history of the valley absorbing, as we stroll past the dam, up to the church, and back past the obelisk.
Nature walk in the morning (11:30), history walk in the afternoon (2:00). No charge, no prior knowledge expected. Bring a camera if you want to identify trees and toadstools in the comfort of your own sitting room later! Oh - and stout shoes, please!
Starting this weekend, there is something for everyone to enjoy on a visit to Lake Vyrnwy.
On Saturday 21st, Thursday 26th and Saturday 28th of August there are guided Walks to the Blanket Bog, offering an opportunity to visit the high moor surrounding the Lake and learn more about the ecology of this rare and beautiful habitat. Booking essential.
On the Saturday evening of the 21st there will be one of the popular Bat Walks, again booking essential.
For the children, on Sunday 22nd August there is an opportunity to help build a Bug Hotel, commencing at 1.00 pm.
Also on Sunday, at the shop, between 10.30 am and 4.00 pm we are holding an Optics Demonstration, affording an opportunity to view and try our extensive range of binoculars and scopes. Our knowledgable staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
The Bank Holiday Weekend sees the culmination of the 2010 Lake Vyrnwy Photographic competition. The deadline for entries is 3.00 pm on Friday 27th August with viewing and voting for the winning entries on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. The prize giving will be at 2.00 pm on Monday 30th August.
The greatest bonus of all is a visit to the lake and reserve, drinking in the stunning scenery and the peace and quiet of this lovely part of Wales.
