No I don’t mean learning to read bumps on the head! That’s Phrenology.
Wildlife Phenology is the study of periodic plant and animal life-cycle events in nature that are influenced by climate and seasonal change, such as wildlife emerging from hibernation, birds nesting or migrating, and flowers blooming.
The first signs of spring are beginning to show themselves, and it won’t be long before the first migrants are back with us here at Lake Vyrnwy. Already we are seeing the first snowdrops and primroses in the countryside, as well as signs of early plants in the garden; and the grass is beginning to grow. Ravens here on the reserve are displaying and pairing up and will be nesting soon.
Why not start your own diary from year to year and see how nature changes; or you might like to help in surveys such as that run by the Woodland Trust. Link to www.naturescalendar.org.uk
