Well August is upon us and we can once again report that all is well at osprey central. Well apart from a slight mishap where Mallachie managed to drop a fish that EJ had very kindly brought in for her. Suffice to say EJ was not best pleased about this situation and spent quite a few minutes peering over the edge of the nest wondering how on Earth the fish had managed to get stuck there. Mallachie, bless her soul, spent this time food soliciting as if she had done nothing wrong. Well we all live and learn.

Apart from that it has been your typical osprey centre day, a few fish, a couple of intruders, a couple of fleeting glimpses of Odin and three happy chicks. The red squirrels have been up to their usual antics, the juvenile woodpeckers have been showing well and we've even had a few glimpses of the young redstarts. So you see we're not all about ospreys here (ok so we are mostly), there are lots of other things to see and enjoy.

So just a quickie to keep you all updated, hope your all grand out there in internet land and if you are up in the area drop in and see the sisters before they're up, up and away!

PS. Thanks to David & Liz, and Loonylynne - all webcam viewers who have visited us in the past few days.  Thanks for dropping by.  -  Richard

PPS Oh, and welcome to your fellow blogger JulieQ, known to many of you, late of Caper-watch 2009 and now working in the Osprey Centre shop on Sundays until the end of the season.  Welcome Julie, and thanks for helping out.  -  Richard

  • Ahhhhh.....THAT explains why they're so agitated at the rear of the nest. Silly girl Mallachie!! Thanks for letting us know...I was getting worried someone had come a cropper!

  • Thank you for the update David:)

  • thanks for that david. think that could be mallachie on nest now trying to find a way to retrieve said fish!

  • Thank you David!  I wish I was back there!  Three weeks seems so long ago now!!!!

  • Buttertalons!

  • Why is David's post under Blogs on the community page but not on the page with the live video? Have I missed something?  Can we only access diary by logging in now?

  • Thank you David :o )  I have seen the squirrels a lot in the past few days...they are gorgeous. I wish they would learn that life would be so much easier if they stuck to their own feeder.

  • We certainly are all Grand out here in Internet land thank you Richard.  I certainly hope Mallachie learned her lesson but I also hope EJ or Odin forgave her and brought another fish!  Being out all day I have missed so much it seems but wonderful photos up in Interland by Paula and Stuart have helped enormously.

  • Thanks David for the update. Couldn't get back to see what was happening, tied up with cricket teas. Now I've come on tonight and of course its quite dark and only a fuzzy picture. Still, will try and latch on tomorrow morning and see what is happening.  Thank you once again and to the team who are doing a fantastic job up there, nearly over for another year!!!!!

  • 3:40 a.m. UK time. Still dark but webcam is up - the nest is just a very faint blur that I can see if I press my nose against the monitor!

FYI Per Paula's suggestion, I started a Daily Update for today, Sunday August 2, at www.rspb.org.uk/.../default.aspx. As Paula points out, whoever wants to post something on the site after midnight GMT can start a new Daily Update (see Start New Thread on the above link). The idea is to provide a central meeting place, so to speak, on the RSPB system for when the birds leave and the staff's Diary updates slow down. Of course, this does not preclude also posting or blathering away on any other site of your choice! :-)

If it doesn't work out for some reason, we can always try something else.

  • 4:25 a.m. in UK. OK, well, just posted to the new Daily Update that a bird landed briefly on the nest. Now, this is kinda redundant - I'm happy to continue on the Diary page too, but feel like I'm all over the site and folks will be sick of seeing my name and reading the same thing!

  • 5:14. OK, well two birds on nest now; one is Garten, the other I'm pretty sure is Mallachie.

5:29 Everyone: I'm doing more detailed posts on the Daily Log I mentioned above. It's under Groups/Loch Garten Ospreys. Been so busy back and forth with all these websites I've missed some action on the nest. Mallachie (I think) left; then Garten left, and M (?) is now back and calling.

    Really tired and signing off.

  • Thanks for the update! One more learning experience. Get a good grasp  on your  fish :)

  • Empty nest just now, they must be off exploring. Black screen at the Hobby nest so I can't get my fix there either. Never mind, such is life. Well, with a bit of luck I will be visiting tomrrow so I can see all this for myself.  Managed to sort out Google earth yesterday so I am all set up for when they go.

  • Empty nest this morning. Thanks for the update David. We are all well out here in Internetland although it is not like seeing the real thing this is the next best for those of us who have not made it to LG this year. As the time for our adopted family to leave approaches I have to thank everyone at LG for all their hard work and giving us all the upto date info in a friendly and informative way. I would also like to thank all my fellow bloggers for their poems, videos and generally good natured banter. You are a very friendly lot and that is what makes this site so good. Like so many of us I am looking forward to tracking Rothes and Mallachie through the winter months and before we know it EJ and Odin will be back. That is what makes it all so magical.
