Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

About that link.....Sorry!

We have now added the document about the red squirrel as an attachment. Hope that helps. Sorry you weren't able to view it before.

  • Debbie I found the document on google and put the google address on the blog but this morning I have been looking at the photos of the LG ospreys and am sorry that this saga is about to end after watching it from the beginning. It makes you want it to go on forever but the best things always come to an end and we will just have to hope that we will be able to watch another amazing saga next year when the heros of the piece return to LG.

  • Hate to think I might have missed EJ going,

does anybody know if indeed she has gone, bless her, I do wish her a safe journey, (as for all of them)

I'm sure lots of hearts will go with her,

Please can someone tell me how to get the daily update

  • I've manged to find the daily updates, and now I feel so sad, and cant believe I want to cry for her going.

this is a wild bird family, not pets, just how can they have touched so many hearts.

  • ELLIELOO:  To get the daily update, click on 'Groups' at the top of the page, then click on the L. Garten Osprey Forum - this will take you to the discussion going on in our part of the RSPB site, including a daily update, (which you just have to click on to get)  usually dated and started by Annette in S. California, who is kindly on duty for us during the night hours when we have to sleep and can't be peeping in!

  • Ellieloo, I'm sure that this is EJ we are looking at - following on from the still pics on the daily update.  Don't think its Garten & I've convinced myself this is EJ. Can anyone confirm please? x

  • LESLEY:   I'm not very good at identification, but the others on line at present seem convinced it is EJ.

  • Darling EJ is still on the branch holding the remains of the fish and looking around for Rothes.  I hope Rothes comes back soon, or EJ will leave unhappy.

  • Thanks Debbie. There is a lot to read, so I am printing it out so I can read it in comfort.

I also feel that EJ seems to be waiting for Rothes and then she has fed all three daughters!

Trouble is it won't be confirmed when she leaves untill she has not been seen for a few days at least.

  • morning all and thanks for all the updates.

I am really enjoying these pictures of EJ:) If (when) she does go soon this has been lovely today, although I did miss the feeding of the two sisters.

I wonder if people at the center are getting all emotinal as well.....

  • Thankyou I am so pleased I have seen her, perhaps just one last time

I do like to think she is waiting to say goodbye, to all her babies,

or is that just a human emotion, whatever it is, she certainly is one brilliant mum

Would she recognise her babies if she ever meets up with them.

  • Thank you for the informatin on the red squirrels.  It seems so easy to say "cut off the forests from the greys" but there are so many more implications.  There would seem to be 2 approaches which do not have any downsides - a vaccine for the pox (although I have no idea how close that is and would not solve the competition problems) and selective contraception for the greys. Is there any reason why this is not being introduced immediately?  I have seen grey squirrels on the Loch of the Lowes webcam so they are not very far away from Loch Garten.  I hope something will be done without waiting for too much more time spent in discussion!

Wow isn't that serious! We need to make the most of our ospreys for the short time remaining.  I wish I could spend more time at our local reservoir in Essex once the migration starts.

  • Thanks Lindybird - should go with my gut instinct!! :o)  She looks so relaxed and calm as if she's taking everything in and thinking back to the Spring and reminiscing - wonderful.  Makes me quite teary and I wish I could give her a hug and wish her well and say "take care and see you next year" xxxx

  • GaryS- I would have thought it would be extremely hard for the LG team not to become emotional. They have, as it were, lived with this family for all these months. They must also be so happy that it has been so successful this year but, like us, hopeful that all goes well with the migration.

After last year, I know there is part of me that is dreading watching Google Earth and the migration!

  • Brenda H, you are so right. All we can do is wish EJ safe passage when she does go and will her back next year:)

I looking forward to the tracking but so hope things don't go wrong.

I have to admit to getting a tiny bit sad and emotional about all this today, but in a strong "guy" way!! LOL

  • Brenda, I totally agree with you about Google Earth and the migration.  I remember after reading about little Deshar's demise last year, the following week I went away to Dorset and  I remember looking out to sea and thinking "my goodness he flew westwards along this stretch, if only he'd turned south" :o( .  You log on to Google Earth with one eye shut and log on to the blog update with the other eye shut!! xx
