A quick up-date with all the available data for now on Rothes....
The postion fixes for her on Friday 14th August were as follows; 9am, she was near St-Vincent-sur Jard, heading east a little in whats looks like an arable farming area. 10am, near L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer. 11am, St. Xandre, east of La Rochelle. 12 noon she turned inland east of Surgeres and by 1pm was just north west of Saintes. At 2pm at an altitude of 978m she passed Gemozac and an hour later had dropped to almost at sea level (just 3m) at La Gironde river, fishing presumably, near St.Romain-sur-Gironde.
So, all still looking good for Rothes, and meantime our other four ospreys are all (?) still with us here at Loch Garten. EJ brought in a fish at 1pm this afternoon, both Mallachie & Garten haven't ventured far at all, but Odin hasn't been seen today as yet, but that's what has been happening lately, just one or two brief appearances a day, so no doubt he'll put in a show later.
That's all for now.
Richard - you are brilliant in letting us know how our 'Rothes the brave' is doing. I asked about altitude a short while ago and you have included that data in your blogs - thanks again for that. My GE-literate husband worked out how to display that. If you go to GE's website (where you can follow Rothes, as you showed us last year for Nethy and Deshar), you are able to zoom in close and then tilt the landscape + set the altitute gain to maximum (under tools) so you can see topographical relief. It just needs playing with a bit but you can get the route in 3D eventually.
Thanks so much, Richard for taking time to keep us informed. Rothes seems to be doing fine ... glad to hear she dropped to almost sea level for the right reason ... as you say, presumably to fish.
Thank you Richard and team. You must all be on tenterhooks. Maybe Mallachie and Garten will change the rules and just stay or as someone said -go when EJ goes so she'll feed them en route> Sincere thanks to you all xx
Sorry to interupt that thank yous' butt where did THAT fish come from? Garten the Glutton!! Ha Ha!
Thanks Richard, she is one plucky girl she obviously doesn't want to waste too much time getting to her destination.
Maybe Odin will be the next one to go after all nothing is really going to plan so far.LOL!! Please thank our camera person for today's close ups, they have been brilliant!!!!
Well done Rothes and thank you Richard for bringing good news. It least she stopped where the fishing should be good. Another 24 hrs on - I wonder where she is now. I can't believe she hasn't stopped for a rest - even the adults often hang about for a bit. Surely she won't go all the way to Senegal (?) without a stop. Camera man has been giving amazing shots again this afternoon - thanks. Mallachie obviously hides behind branches! - and Garten is STILL eating
Thanks Richard. I use your updates to whiz on over to Google Earth and see her as-yet-unmarked route.
THank you DjoanS for letting us know.
Thanks so much for the updates!! Happy to read it appears Rothes is attempting to fish. It may be unprecedented for a juvenile to leave before the adult female but "Rothes is EJ's daughter" and EJ does the unexpected. LOL Who know maybe the girls do plan to leave with Mom.
Someone posted a picture of Mallachie and Garten "each" eating a fish on the same branch. That is great! Mallachie has now learned to fly carrying a fish. One step closer to fishing for herself.
Have I missed something on the hobby nest? It looks empty to me or am I being blind?
Jeanette Holly is hiding in the fir tree branches at the forefront of the screen. She flaps her wings and jumps down and jumps back. Shes fine. :))
I think Odin will go before EJ because the girls are going to leave with their mothetr:))
Jeanette Holly is there now
Thank you Richard - these frequent updates are much appreciated! Great to know where intrepid Rothes is...
Thanks Richard for another informative update. Rothes is doing really well.
Empty nest at 18:00.
Beautiful evening here on Tracy Island. May need to fold up the palm trees to get some shade. F.A.B.
Fantastic, breathing a sigh of releif, visited her last spot in France, but not to catch a fish.
Just had my posh France atlas out to check her route. I think she is determined to beat Roy Dennis's Beatrice.
My husband has recorded a few bits today and hopefully the remaining days and then will be able to do something clever to get some photos, wish I asked him earlier in the season however he may be able to put the u tube clips together in order for me to watch when I am missing them all, hopefully.
