Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Hello

This evening's map update has been prepared. As you might guess, not a lot has changed.

Rothes: still pootling around the Gironde and returning to her favourite spot next to the big ponds. It's been up to 23 degrees C there (73 F)

Mallachie: still at Loch Garten. She got almost as far as Nethy Bridge. That's as exciting as it gets. The temperature has been up to 14 degrees C (57 F)

It's interesting to note that Nethy and Deshar left the nest on 20 August last year.

Have a good weekend, and don't have nightmares.

  • Thanks, Katie.  Glad Rothes is enjoying her French holiday. Have a good weekend yourself, too.

  • Thankyou, Katie!  Perhaps Rothes is waiting for her sisters to catch up? :).  Mallachie is at least venturing a little further- even if only to Nethy Bridge!  I do wish they'd learn to fish for themselves before they set off, though.

You have a good weekend, too - we're off to Birdfair!

  • Thanks Katie for that update although not a lot seems to have changed which is probably a good thing. Rothes has found a good spot to hone her fishing skills. The more practice she gets the better it will be for the trials ahead.

Mallachie and Garten look well prepared for their migration. I expect they will soon start fishing when they have to as instinct will kick in.

  • Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Oh Katie, Vous parle Francais tres bien !!!

    Have a bonne weekend !!!!

  • P.S. Hope you enjoyed 'Thunderbirds are go' on Film 4 this afternoon alan....

    Nice to see Tracy Island..:-)

  • THANKS Katie!

It sounds cold there (brrr) Hope you get some sunshine/warmth during the weekend!

  • Thank you Katie for the update .. I'm sure she is waiting for her Sisters to join her why ever else would she stop migrating having left so early to get to Africa ... I guess only she knows .... typical female :)

  • Caberfeidh : Sorry I missed that but I can assure you the real thing is much better.

    F.A.B.

  • Caberfeidh : Katie is probably using uk.babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt just like I did to understand the comments :)

  • Caberfeidh : I was a bit miffed I did not get an oscar for my part in that film. F.A.B.

  • Thanks for the update Katie, you have a nice weekend too.

We are looking at Garten, she's been calling frantically for her supper...

  • Katie: Especial thanks for putting the temps in Fahrenheit! We're a bit behind here in the States - at some point some years back they tried to convert us to the metric system and posted road signs in kilometres and miles, but then they took them down so we went back to driving just miles  :-)

  • It looks lovely and sunny up there at the moment, Garten still preening herself but on the tree now, or it could just be Mallachie?  No its Garten, can't see an antenna.

  • Thank you for the update Katie. Looking at the temperatures Rothes got it right - Garten and Mallachie will need their sweaters .  Perhaps the cooler weather will persuade them to go - sad though that will be

  • Well done ospreys stay put until Richard gets back, he won't want to miss your departure.

Glad to see Rothes is trying out a different tree each night and suprised to hear only 73 degrees as 75 here yesterday.

Had a quick heavy shower at 4pm with thunder, now hot again.

We visited LG at the end of July and thought Richard was nice and friendly. I have discovered that he does a lot of talks at the local village community centre and also occasionally leads some wildlife holidays and it looks like (if the internet info is correct) he is leading a group in November in Trinidad. He is very dedicated and even gives us information about our beloved ospreys at the weekends and evenings. I was wondering the other day if he has a family or whether his ospreys were his family. Does anyone know the answer to this. Thought I would ask whilst he is away.

    JILLIAN
