Hello.

Mallachie really has made my job as temporary basher-in of data for the map rather easy. She has managed this by not going very far.

When I receive the data, I scan through it looking for coordinates different from the norm (there wouldn't be much point in putting in all the identical coords from the nest). I pick out the more interesting ones. We have data from the weekend, but it will come as no surprise to you, osprey-watchers, that she hasn't really been any further than halfway to Nethy Bridge.

The tags capture data once an hour, on the hour. Of course, it's feasible that Mallachie sneaks off for long flights between 1 minute and 59 minutes past the hour. But it seems unlikely.

On to Rothes, our balbuzard pêcheur dans la belle France. She's been more active and has kept me busy for part of this afternoon.

We don't have full data for Sunday and today yet, but on Friday she went on a jaunt across to the south side of the estuary. On Saturday she flew a bit upriver before returning to roost at her favourite spot near the sturgeon place. One of the points shows she flew past the nuclear power station, the Centrale nucléaire du Blayais, on the banks of the Gironde. It's good to see she's exploring her local area.

As for when Mallachie will follow suit, I've no idea, but I can't wait to see where the sisters go next!

  • Thank you, Katie.  Much appreciated.  How different can two sisters be?

  • Thanks Katie for that update. Good to know Rothes is still in a good area. Mallachie is a bit of a home bird at the moment but I am sure instinctively she will know the right time to leave.

  • Thanks Katie!!

  • Thanks Katie for the update.  She certainly knows her favourite roost does Rothes.  Maybe she won't head any further south???.... as for Mallachie - she seems to like her home comforts and the security of home.  If she could, I think she would have a little security blanket attached to her backpack! x

  • Thanks pony tail girl!!

    Lesley

now I have a picture of an osprey with a  security blanket !! :)))

  • You do realise that when Cirrus comes home she won't know where we are!!!  :)))

  • Many thanks Katie. We know you are on the tech. side but could you ask your LG colleagues where the rest of the family are today please.

  • Thanks Katie for another excellent blog. Mallachie has been very disturbed today don't you think?, back & forth from nest to tree, & not going anywhere else in case she misses a fish breakfast/lunch. Now Garten nowhere to be seen - has she gone?? after being so well fed yesterday, it's possible. Rothey just left out of the blue, Oh how I wish Garten was tagged!!!  Is it lack of money that prevents all of them from being tagged? or some other reason. If it is monetary, I'm sure that next year we could have a whip round - or sponsorship??? I bet by the time I finish this something well have happened , it usually does!!

  • Thanks Katie for the update, every day we expect them to go and guess what they are still here. They are obviously in no hurry to leave. You do not mention Odin and EJ today are we to take that they have not been seen recently??

  • Lindybird and Barbara from Switzerland

The osprey programme shown was on Country Tracks and featured the Rutland Water ospreys.

Ben Fogle and the LG ospreys are on Countryfile which has yet to be screened

  • Mallachie in the tree and it looks sunny!

  • Cirrus

If you are using IE then click on favourites then click on Feeds and the blog you have subscribed to should be there.

  • Mallachie back on her nest .. for the time being.

She does look like she doesn't know what to do.

    Still squawking and nobody coming.

The nest looks quite flat now.

  • Lynette: thanks for that clearer explanation, which is the method I have always used. I assumed, probably wrongly, that Cirrus wished to remove Deshar's route permanently. Oh dear, smack on the wrist for me when Cirrus returns!

I have a theory that Garten has acquired an acupuncture needle which she uses as a pretend antenna so that a parent in a hurry will drop her a fish intended for Mallachie.

    Meanwhile, back on the nest/post/tree.........

  • Tinker, we did collect the money for tracking the second bird but it was too late to buy a third. They have to be ordered a year ahead.
