Loch Garten ospreys

Love the Loch Garten ospreys? Tell us all about it!

Mallachie moves on, but Rothes seems settled....

Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

Mallachie moves on, but Rothes seems settled....

There's not much to report on Rothes, she is still in the same general area, north of Bordeaux on La Gironde River, as at 4pm yesterday evening - the last data fix that we have for her.  Her wee sister, Mallachie, is on the move.  Having roosted in the Longhoughton area of Northumberland on Saturday evening, come first thing Sunday morning she was pressing on south into North Yorshire.

Here are a few selected locations she passed en route;

5am just north of Acklington,

6am she flew over a huge quarry at West Chevington,

7am near Ulgham, south of Widdrington Station,

8am she flew over A19 near Seaton Burn roundabout,

9am West Pelton near Chester-le-Street,

10am if you live in Proudfoot Drive, Bishop Auckland and were in your garden, she went right over you, - (hope she didn't poop on any one's washing!),

11am just west of Scotch Corner on A1,

1pm near Whitwell, east of Catterick,

3pm just west of Northallerton, and between 3pm and 8pm she seems to have been fishing along the River Swale, presumably roosted nearby and continued to quarter the river again early next morning when her last fix was at 5am today 31st August.

Meantime, back here at Loch Garten we have had intruder osprey White TF with us again today, this morning at least, and he seems to be trying to make a statement of intent - bringing in sticks and fresh nesting material !!  Come April, Odin might have rival on his hands.  Next season's osprey intrigue has started already!

  • Thank you Richard for info on Mallachie. I knew she'd do it..  And thank you for eberyone at LG for everything you'e all done above and beyon the call....

It has been a real insight into these wonderful creatures...

  • Thanks Richard. I'm glad that Mallachie is pressing on south and very encouraging that she seems to be pausing to refuel along the way.

  • Oh White TFs  a male, thought the opposite,  hence I was thinking Ej being middle aged in comparison would have HER  work cut out. So could it have been White TF she inadvertently accepted a fish from earlier in the season

Thank you for update on Mallachie

  • Hi Yish, You've changed your Avatar??

  • Thanks for the update Richard.  Hope she is having better weather than we are here.  We will be heading south on Friday morning so will keep a lookout for Mallachie but, at this rate, hopefully she could have crossed the Channel by then.  Pru

  • Thanks, Richard ... brilliant news ... hope she helped herself to a salmon from the Coquet on Saturday night! To think ... she almost flew over my house at 8am yesterday ... if it had been today I would have been up there at that time ... taking a friend to work :(( Glad to hear Rothes is doing well too ... good luck to them all. Thanks again ... must be time-consuming for you to be doing the co-ordinates for both of them now!

  • Thank you Richard.

Good to see Mallachie's making steady progress. Hopefully, if Rothes stays put for a few days, Mallachie will join her. Hopefully Garten is doing alright. Deep sigh...

So, White TF is a male then? I thought that but everyone seemed to think TF was female. He will make interesting watching next Spring. Of course we'll all be rooting for Magnificent Odin!

  • Thanks for the update Richard. Very comprehensive details of Mallachies movements and glad she appears to be fishing on the river Swale. It is good to know that Rothes is still in the same area as the fishing appears to be good there. I wonder if she knows that Beatrice has moved on to Spain.

White TF has her sights set on that nest. Next March should be interesting.

  • Thank you Richard for your wonderful blogs all season.

You have kept us up to date with our family's highs and lows. The lowest maybe being the morning of the Tesco fish. We couldn't believe our ears and eyes that morning. One of the highs being the safe migration of all of our family of 5.

And now a squatter is setting his/her sights on the nest for next year. What a cliffhanger to end the season on!!! In 7 months we'll start all over again.

Life is never dull in the land of ospreys :)

  • Thanks for the factual updates Richard. They are great. I see Roy Dennis's 'Beatrice' has gone through the Pyrenees into Spain.

  • THANKS Richard... good news :-)

Me too (thought that white TF was a female)

  • Cirrus - sorry about typo! Although I don't know how I typed e instead of o!!

Yes, I had read that White TF was female, so I got it wrong!  Seems like a good house-husband then! but not at our house in LG please.

Thanks Richard for the update. Is she heading down the A1 I wonder?

  • This is the info supplied by Roy Dennis a couple of weeks ago about White TF - he doesn't say here whether he/she is male or female

"Roy Dennis, who maintains the osprey colour ring data, tells us that white/black TF seen at the Loch Garten eyrie, and photographed fishing at Rothiemurchus Fishery in July, was  ringed as a chick (in a brood of three) by Ian Francis on 13th July 2007, in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire. Two year returning for the first time"     best wishes   Roy   Roy Dennis MBE

  • Thank you Richard for the update and details. Thanks also for TF's news. Shouldn't you tell him that you will be repairing the nest and he is wasting his time, not to mention EJ's and Odin's reaction to him next spring.

  • She's not daft is she, our girl in la belle France? Apparently there is an artificial lake at Montalipan which is well-stocked with various nice big tasty fish for anglers.
