Rothes stays put, whilst Mallachie continues south....

Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

Rothes stays put, whilst Mallachie continues south....

The lastest data is just in and still Rothes remains in La Gironde estuary, continuing to fish the river, but she always seems to head back to Dr Jones' sturgeon farm to rest & roost.  Last fix for her was 9pm last evening, 1st September.

Meanwhile though, Mallachie  continues south.  Following on from yesterday's blog, she left Strines Reservoir near Sheffield at 3pm-ish heading south-west close to Foolow.  At 4pm she was near Winster, west of Matlock.  An hour later at 5pm, she apperars to have by-passed what must have been the very tempting Carsington Water, instead heading south a little further to near Biggin where she seems to have spent the night.  Next day (today, 2nd Sept) she spent a couple of hours close to the Branston Golf & Country Club west of Lichfield, at an adjacent lake complex.  She then proceeded down the A38 to Huddlesford, near Lichfield and then at 1pm today Mallachie flew over central Birmingham, over Park Lane, the B4144 to be precise!

If someone in an office block in Central Birmingham, said... "you'll never guess what I saw when I looked out my office window at lunchtime today.......?"  The reply would surely be...."Nah! No chance matey, you need to take more water with it".   It just goes to show eh? No matter where birds usually occur, they can turn up absolutely anywhere on migration.

  • WOW don't think there are any big fish ponds in the middle of Birmingham. Wonder where she will roost tonight?

  • Thanks for the update Richard my sister in law lives in Foolow....wonder if she saw her!!! The weather forecast looks horrendous so I should think she will get wherever she goes... Good Luck Mallachie!! Rothes obviously knows a good thing when she finds it either that or she is waiting for Garten and Mallachie to join her......well she might be LOL!!

  • Thanks once again Richard. Rothes looks as though she means to stay in that area for some time which is probably a good thing. Mallachie flying over Birmingham. Well at least it is easier that driving through it especially on the M6. It looks like her track is taking her too far to the west for Rutland Water.

  • Thank you again for keeping us so up to date - what will we do when you close for winter? Mallachie is obviously missing human company - if you are a Loch Garten chick you are used to adoring crowds:o)

  • Thanks so much Richard. I'm enjoying watching the progress of the girls so much already.

Don't have anything else to add so won't!!

  • Thanks again Richard for the further update.  Mallachie is certainly travelling now.  Maybe she has heard the weather forecast for the next few days.  Pru

  • We, (Janine and I) watched out for Mallachie over Rutland Water today- but sadly no sighting.  God speed Mallachie and every Osprey that has left or is leaving our shores.  We await their return.

  • Thanks Richard!!  Good to know  Mallachie is still pushing south. Rothes may be considering staying for the  winter. Is it warm enough there during winter  for her to stay there?

The next" fingers crossed event"  will be when Mallachie  crosses the English Channel.

  • Much appreciate your update Richard ... it sure is good to know that Mallachie's Instinct has kicked in at last ... Go Mallachie Go !

  • As always your update much appreciated Richard.  Obviously Rothes is quite happy where she is at the moment but I do hope Mallache is not caught up in the horrendous weather yet.  Here in Dorset we have heavy rain and high winds.  Should be dryer tomorrow but still windy so I hope it does not blow her of course.

  • Nice update Richard and nice to follow progress down the country every chance of coming over Dorset, will keep our eyes open.Come on folks get rattles back in pram plenty of places to blog just a very mild rebuke.Appreciate all Richard has done for you.

  • Great Richard I do hope she is roosting somewhere dryish and not windy although the whole country seems wet , let me know if she is thought to be heading Hampshire way I will be out there !! Thanks again Richard .

  • I think young Mallachie likes to be in the "spotlight" (watched by humans on webcams or in Central Birmingham) Hope she found a nice, calm place to rest at during the night, so glad to hear everything seems fine with them both. Thank you Richard!

Ps. Nice to see the webcam is back, even if the birds are gone. (The big birds)

  • Given the gale winds we have had here in Devon today I do hope Mallachie can keep to the centre of the storm tracking north east.  That will bring her west - no bad thing if she follows Rothes tracks!

  • It looks like I should have stayed in Oxford another day    lol      She still seems to be following a similar route to Nethy so could pass over Hampshire way Valerie.  I guess Weymouth.  Or maybe Bournmouth as the Red Arrows are out of the way now.
