Rothes remains at/around the sturgeon farm, north of Bordeaux, France. She seems to have had a lazy day down there, not moving very much, just biding her time pottering about between 6am and 9pm yesterday. There was a gap in the data though, between 1pm and 8pm, so perhaps she popped off to the river in that time.
Yesterday's data showed Mallachie to be over Birmingham at 1pm. The latest data just in, shows her to have carried on going, over M42 at Lickey, Worcestershire at 2pm, Bromsgrove Golf Centre at 5pm, passing Pikes Pool Lane, Tutnall at 6pm and then she made an evening visit to Hewell HM Prison, near Tardebigge, north east of Redditch. There seems to be large lake either in the grounds or just next door and the last fix at 9pm last night, suggests that she roosted there at Her Majesty's pleasure.
Here on site we are in the throes of packing up, though still open to visitors until Sunday 6th. No osprey sightings for a while now. So it looks like White TF has gone now too. Heavy rain all day today and cold with it too, so all rather miserable here today.
Just caught up with all the updates, thank you Richard. You have all done sterling work up at LG and I wish you all well during the winter months. Will keep logging into GE to see where the girls have got to. Do hope that Garten makes it alright.
Will take advice and go to group forums when diary closes. Thanks again.
Thanks for that update re Rothes and Mallachie. It seems that Mallachie is taking her time moving down the country. I guess we will have to call her a jailbird now.
Thanks again Richard, really appreciate the time you spend on us. It must be a bleak task packing everything away and the cold won't lift spirits either. I wish I could pop over with a chocolate cake :(
Take care one and all at LG; we're thinking of you x
Thanks Richard for the update, the Autumnal weather has at last reached the north east coast of England, heavy rain overnight and strong winds today....the leaves are starting to fall, the nights are drawing in and the mornings don't have the same spark in them. Lovely to hear the girls are progressing nicely away from all this bad weather, hopefully Odin, EJ and Garten are safe too. We have Gremlins on the computer today so I hope you get this post!!
Hi all,
Glad to hear that Mallachie is making progress and Rothes continues (we presume) to hone her fishing skills around the Gironde. The weather here in France has now cooled significantly so it looks like Autumn is headed our way too, it must feel strange packing up the centre, another extremely successful year gone. as many others have said before me: 'THANK YOU' to all the team, your information and insights have been so welcome. And a special thankyou for the (what must have been very tough) decision to supply the nest with fish at that difficult time, it added so much pleasure to all of us who watched. Have a good winter where ever you go team, look forward to next years continuing saga!
It doesn't sound nice at LG today, Richard. No wonder White TF has gone! Good luck with the packing. I wonder whether Mallachie was spotted by any of the inmates!!
Thank you Richard for the update on our girls...
Funny to think that Mallachie spent the night in jail so to speak, but at least she was safe there !!
Also pleased to hear that beautiful TF has left before he rains came.
The visitor numbers at the centre must be dropping off now especially with the atrocious weather you are getting.
I hope the shop did well this year and made lots of money and I know you have had a bumper year with people signing up to the RSPB and supporting all the wonderful work you do..
Can I ask a couple of questions please to be answered when you get a mo...
Will the GE tracking continue to update daily when you close down or will it , like last year if I remember, go to weekly updates and if so when ??
Also, will yourself, Debbie, Claire and Katie and the rest of the gang all be back next year???
Great news Richard so pleased Mallachie is taking things gently more so than sister Rothes did for sure . Still hoping she might end up somewhere down south for a few days so I can go find her and get a pic - wouldnt that be awesome , it happened last year with Nethy and Deshar so why not !! Must be sad packing up , do you have to do the toilets this year ??? Thanks for everything Richard .
Thanks for letting us know the latest Richard. Pleased both girls are doing well so far. Hope theres a 'Birdman of Hewell' looking out for Mallachie!
Many thanks Richard and the team at LG, for all your hard work during this past osprey season. It will be very interesting to compare this years osprey travels with Nethy and Deshars and I hope and pray that this years chicks all make it. Off to Europe for 2 weeks, so hope to be able to follow their progress whilst away. Thankyou to everyone again and I hope you all get a well deserved rest.
Morning folks.
I can see a long line of people standing staring skyward under Mallachie's projected/hope for path. As someone said, Just don't trip over anything!
Oor Wullie: Can't find that post you mentioned on the Chat page.
The migration is well under way, so here is a list of birds to follow, with the latest position as I know it, from websites.....the list may be incomplete, so if you can please help, add any tagged ospreys that we can follow. So far in 2007, 2008 and 2009, we have not had any simultaneous fixes, I.E. two birds in the same place at the same time. Although visual sightings have been made of pairs or groups of ospreys.
RSPB, Mallachie, Sept 3rd, Hewell HM Prison, near Tardebigge, assuming she stayed there until this morning.
RSPB, Rothes, Dr Jones' sturgeon farm, Saint-Fort-sur-Gironde, Sept 2nd. (both as per this diary entry).
HFW, (Roy Dennis), Beatrice, Malagon, Spain, on the move, 11AM, 2nd Sep.
HFW, Talisman, fishing at Findhorn Bay, 1st Sep.
HFW, Nimrod, fishing at Culbin Bars, 1st Sep.
HFW, Morven, flying from Caithness in direction of Findhorn Bay, 1st Sep.
If past experience is followed, then Beatrice should over-winter at Guadiaro river which is 340 kilometres further on. Nimrod from memory was in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau last year and had a favourite river with mudflats and Morven was on the Atlantic coast, in Mauritania and appeared to be spending every night in the desert. There were no trees where she was, so she was either on the ground or up on some rocks. Have I missed anyone? There may be some Scandinavian tagged birds this year.
jsb : Roy mentions that Red 8T has a transmitter fitted and hopes to deploy 2 more but leaving it a bit late now. I have no knowledge of any tagged Scandinavian birds but there could be some.
Thanks for the update Richard. What weather today. Glad our birds have gone. I think they are having better weather in England and almost certainly in France. We are heading south tomorrow but don't think we will catch up with Mallachie though. Happy packing at the centre- just what I will be doing any time now. Pru
Oor Wullie: Ignore my previous post - was confused. Sorry!
jsb: These are all tagged birds, right? Thanks for the info, regardless!
