Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

Well I've just added the new data, and there isn't a great deal to report. As Rothes hasn't yet run out of fish (I'm assuming) she is (as of 9pm yesterday, 14th) still in her favoured spot - though she did head over to the coast briefly, to near Conac, before returning to roost in 'her spot'.

Mallachie is also still taking it easy, hanging around where we left her yesterday in Portugal, then taking a brief trip north yesterday afternoon (about 15km) up the N332 past Zebreira to visit another reservoir. She then returned to near Ladoeiro to roost (as of 9pm yesterday).

I'll update you all again tomorrow.

  • Thanks, Alice. It's good to read that "our beloved sisters" are doing well :-)

  • Thankyou so glad thet are both doing well, hope the otheres are doing ok too

they are all still in my thoughts,

  • Pleased to see that Mallachie is appearing to be resting up and hopefully building up her reserves again for the next leg of her journey.  Wonder if Rothes will be ready to move on soon?  How long did Nethy and Deshar stop for last year when they rested up in the south of England.  I think not as long, but I could be mistaken.

  • Many Thanks, Alice.

  • Many thanks Alice. Even though it may not be "much" news, it is awaited with anticipation out here!

KathyJ, I think both Nethy and Desher hung around in the south of England for a number of weeks (possible 2-4??) I know it was much longer than I was expecting.

  • Thanks a lot Alice. It is all looking good for the girls so far. FAB

  • Had a look on GE this morning and I'm not surprised that Mallachie hasn't moved, that is a big resevoir she has found and it obviously is well stocked with fish. Rothes must have fancied a little trip to the beach, or maybe she was just checking out the area before moving on!!

Anyway glad to hear they are both doing well,thank-you for the news Alice!

  • Thanks you Alice!! The "no news-- everything is fine"  reports are very welcome!!

Mallachie visiting reservoirs is  great news too. She knows where to get a meal and must have learned to fish  by now.  Roy Dennis's Rothie survived too so that is also  great news

    I love reading  good news!!

What  is the  lowest winter temperature where Rothes is staying?  Is it warm enough for her to winter there?

  • Great news, Alice ... they both look as if they are settled for the moment and feeding well for whatever lies ahead.

  • Great to hear all is still well with Rothes and Mallachie, Alice thank you for the update, much appreciated.

Barbara Jean I asked that question and was told they don't overwinter in France as yet.

  • On BBC1's Countryfile on Sunday 20th September there is to be a feature on the unlawful killing of Birds of Prey. This is 'prime time' exposure. I'm sure many on here have 'signed the pledge' and would wish to see the programme. Unpleasant though it undoubtedly will be.

  • Thanks Alice this is just the news we like to hear that our girls are safe and well.  I too think of Garten, EJ and Odin as well as all mgrating ospreys and hope their journey is safe as well.

I think you are right Gary Deshar and Nethy stayed on the South Coast for about 4 weeks.  Maybe that means that Rothies will move on soon as she must have stocked herself up well by now.  Looking good for Mallachie as she has also found a good place to fish.

Mike thanks for telling us about the Countryfile programme.  Upsetting as it will be I feel it is important to see exactly what goes on and perhaps other people will learn from it.

  • Thanks Alice, good to see Mallachie exploring the area she's in at the moment. I've a feeling that Rothes may be getting itchy feet soon, but we shall see.

Kathy J: Both Nethy and Deshar spent over a month in their respective parts of southern England last year. Both had arrived by 25th August: Deshar set off on his fateful voyage on 26th September and Nethy left on 29th September.

  • Thanks as always for keeping us up to date. Hope this good news continues.

  • Thanks Alice. Nice to know we can relax for another day knowing the girls are presumably eating well.
