Bad weather?

Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.

Bad weather?

Well the weather in France might have turned distinctly autumnal, but this hasn't convinced Rothes that it is time to move further south yet. I've just had a look at the data that my two short term resi vols spent the afternoon inputting (I'm writing that in case there are any glaring errors...!) and Rothes has stuck with where she knows. The latest point I have for her is 8am this morning (21st) when she was just off the coast about 2miles from her favoured roost/fishing site.

Meanwhile Mallachie spent the weekend switching between the two reservoirs, roosting at the one near Ladoeiro and then spending the day at the one north of Zebreira. As of 8am this morning she was still at the one near Ladoeiro.

I'll update you all again tomorrow - but now I must go to maintain the chainsaw I was using this morning...

  • Thanks, Alice.. I guess it's still "no news is good news" - but I wish they'd move just to untangle the knitting on Google Earth!

  • Thanks as always Alice. Relieved to know all is well.

  • Thanks Alice for the latest update. It is good to know that all is well with R & M.

  • Thanks for the update Alice.  It's great to know our birds are enjoying themselves.  "Chainsaw" that sounds very scary!!  We were down at Loch Garten on Friday - glorious day - not an osprey in sight.  Any idea yet when the Goose Roost watch is this year?  Pru

  • Thank you Alice ... I love this 'no onward movement' news ... means they are happy where they are for the moment.

  • Many Thanks, Alice, do appreciate it. :-)

  • Many thanks Alice. Good to know they are both well and moving around!

  • As long as there is signs of movement that's all good.  Thanks to your and the Vols, hope you're not working them too hard on their first day.

  • Thanks Alice for the update I was sure that Rothes at least would have moved on but there must be good fishing where she is and a little bit of bad weather is not going to put her off.  Good to see Mallachie moving around as well.  Do be careful with the chain saw sounds a bit scary to me.

  • A chainsaw?  Is there no end to your talent, Alice?  Thanks so much for the update - much much appreciated.  I needed an Osprey fix after the weekend.

  • Maintain the chainsaw Alice ??  The mind boggles. I've too  much imagination sometimes.

I just hope 'our' girls are fishing successfully. Does anyone know how long juveniles take to really master the art of fishing? A colleague at work this evening was not particularly encouraging about the matter.

  • Alice, thanks for the update.  I'm sure the girls will move on when 'the spirit moves them' (or at least the weather gets too cold!  Good for you using and maintaining a chainsaw - I haven't progressed past the electric hedge-trimmer, and that's scary enough!

  • Hi Alice -- First, thank you for the updates.  Second, chainsaws ROCK!

Now to my question. hahaha  I was wondering if anyone has spoken again (since August 28) to Dr. Jones at the sturgeon farm in St Fort sur Gironde regarding Rothes.  Any actual sightings of her there?

  • Thanks Alice. Just watch that you don't get near EJ's nest with that chainsaw. :-)

Cirrus: So if what your colleague claims is true, it's good that they're staying put to hone their skills, right?

WVsUSAn: Hallo there. Haven't seen you for a while.

  • Annette, yes, - they certainly need to be up to weight to fly over the Saraha. 'Our' girls were SO healthy when they set of too.
