Well Rothes has reached Mauritania. She continued over the sea from 5am on the 28th, hitting land near Tidergit in Morocco at 9am on the 28th. She continued south crossing the border into Western Sahara at 11am on 28th. Not keen to halt much she has carried on south into Mauritania by 2pm on 28th. The latest point I had this morning when I downloaded the data was 10am yesterday (29th) when she was still in Mauritania heading south, but at a slower pace (between 7pm on 28th and 9am on 29th the speed she's been travelling when a reading was taken was 0). So she's obviously finding perches to stop on, but continuing south to find a suitable location to stop for a bit in.

Meanwhile Mallachie is happily moving about in the same place in Portugal.

I know from your comments there's been a bit of concern because we didn't update the map or blog yesterday. I had a bit of a workparty wasp nest situation to deal with which kept me out of the office. Rest assured both chicks are fine.

If Richard has time he'll update the data again this afternoon and stick a bit more onto the blog.

  • Thanks Alice.  That's a relief.  Like many bloggers, no doubt, I was getting a bit concerned.  Hope you sorted out the wasp nest situation without any problems.  Pru

  • Thank truly for that update Alice.  And for taking the time. We really really appreciate it. We are just so hungry for news !

  • Thanks. It's great to hear that she's heading on in the right direction.  Quite understand that the wasp nest was a priority. I hope no-one got stung.

  • Thank you so much Alice:) You know what we are like out here!

  • Great news, Alice, and thanks for taking the time ... what a relief, although I was trying to be positive :))

  • A great and welcome update, Alice. Thank you so much. Wasp nest eh! Well, I trust both yourselves and the wasps are just fine. (Or was the nest in someone's property? mmm, hope not)

Atta girl Rothes. And twice blessed Mallachie will make it too when she gets going.

  • Thanks Alice for that much awaited update. I am glad that Rothes has reached land and is progressing well through the desert. Those pesky wasps eh. How dare they interfere with our osprey news.

  • Thanks, Alice -good to know all's well.  Rather you than me with the wasps nest  - I've been terrified of them ever since I was stung in the local greengrocers, aged three!

  • Great to hear that Rothes is back over land . . .she should have been fitted with a mini satnav as well as her transmitting device so she could just tap (claw) in the Senegal/Gambia postcode to find her way to her winter quarters without us having sleepless nights worrying about her fate

  • Phew Alice!  Thank goodness for that - breathe a sigh of relief.  I still think it is so amazing that she knows where to go - absolutely astounding.  Glad to hear Mallachie is still Ok.  I wonder if she will move south soon or decide to stay in the area.  I wonder what makes their minds up for them? x

  • Thanks Alice.  Having been away for a few weeks I logged on with some trepidation remembering that it was about this time last year that we had all our dramas with poor dear Deshar, but now feel hugely relieved.  Great news that both girls are still doing well.  Must catch up now with all the blogs I've missed whilst I've been away.

  • Thank you so much Alice.  Great to hear from you, and get news of the girls!

  • Wow, go Rothes!!

  • Thank you, Alice. No wasp stings, I hope. Well done, Rothes. It's interesting that Morven, one of Roy Dennis' ospreys wintered on the coast in Mauretania and appears to be doing the same this year. Red 8T seems to be heading in the same direction. Others of his are staying in Portugal, and seemingly might well winter there this year. I wonder if Mallachie will. If only we knew where EJ, Odin and Garten were.

  • Alice so releived to hear all is well with Rothes and Mallachie and Rothes is certainly putting in a lot of flying time.  Hardly dared to log in this afternoon as I felt so worried as we all did.  Hope you didn't get stung, I really loathe wasps.  I know they serve a purpose but after being stung by them so many times they are not my favourite things.  Now I can go off and enjoy my Joe Brown concert tonight in the knowledge that all all well.  Thanks for taking the time in your busy schedule to let us know everything is OK..
